PXG 0811 Vs. Callaway Mavrik Driver Comparison Overview

It’s always nice to have versatility when you’re teeing off. You never know what kind of challenges each hole will present so sometimes, you need a driver that can adjust on the fly. For this reason, we went out and tested two drivers that could help in these types of situations.

One takes adjustment to the extreme while the other plays it a little bit cooler. Find out which one would suit your game the best in the following comparison overview.

PXG 0811 Driver Overview

PXG took adjustability to the extreme when they produced the original PXG 0811 driver.

It features 16 weights (tungsten and titanium) that can be adjusted to fine-tune the CG. We found this to be a little bit cumbersome because adjusting the titanium weights made almost no discernible difference on our swings.

However, the tungsten weights were certainly worthwhile as adjusting them produced a noticeable shift in CG. The cool thing was that you could orientate the weight for front or rear CG to adjust spin rates.

The PXG 0811 lice also features the 0811XF which may be more congenial to beginners and high handicappers since it has an oversized head and an expansive sweet spot. The 0811X would be great for mid to low handicappers who have no trouble making consistent contact with the ball.

Overall, we liked the versatility that the PXG 0811 allowed for – even though it certainly takes time to tune it precisely how you like.

Callaway Mavrik Driver Overview

The Callaway Mavrik driver features the OptiFit hosel that Callaway fans have come to love but it should be noted that it’s the only driver in the Mavrik family not to feature an adjustable weight.

The Mavrik Max and the Mavrik Sub Zero both have the adjustable hosel and an interchangeable weight. Still, the standard Mavrik lies comfortably between the Max and Sun Zero in terms of performance.

It’s not as forgiving as the Max but it is more forgiving than the Sub Zero which features a 450CC head and produces the lowest launch of the three. Compared to the PXG 0811, the Mavrik driver also produced more distance.

Even with the PXG 0811 driver precisely tuned, we were only getting max distances of about 278 yards while the Mavrik driver was yielding average distances of 280 yards. We will be the first to admit that it’s a negligible difference but it should definitely be noted.

The Callaway Mavrik was also producing slightly higher spin rates but the carry distance was what made it longer.

The PXG 0811 would be best for low handicappers while the Mavrik would be more congenial for players who are still struggling a bit with slices.

PXG 0811 Driver First Impressions

At first glance, we could see that the shape of the 0811 driver face was unique. It was deep (or tall depending on how you want to put it) and made for excellent spin ratio.

Right off the bat, the PXG 0811 driver played long. It worked to dramatically reduce spin off the tee and produced high-arcing shots.

Carry distance was also impressive. To say that this driver played long would be an understatement. Still, for all the distance, the 0811 driver is surprisingly forgiving.

PXG claims that by using a robotic face polishing process, they were able to add a slight curvature to the face. This may be what enhances the spin correction at impact and the forgiveness of this driver.

The 0811 Family

The 0811 driver family also includes the 0811 X Proto driver. The X Proto is the more forgiving driver but it does produce significantly more spin than the standard 0811.

Mavrik Driver – First Impressions

Once you get passed the bright colors and attractive design, you can immediately see how light and wieldy the Mavrik drivers really are.

The face on the club is huge and it gives you the confidence you need to let the driver rip, even on the first tee with a crowd gathered to watch. The face is also ultra thin, ultra light special steel which sends the ball into orbit on contact.

Two internal jailbreak bars on under side of the club hold everything together by connecting the sole with the crown and adding extra stability, feel, consistency and distance. The shape of the driver is also aerodynamic and like everything with the clubs, focused on more swing speed.

The Different Mavrik Driver Versions:

The Mavrik is for your average player or mid handicapper, medium levels of forgiveness, and mid spin. This one has a standard launch angle too.

The Mavrik max is similar with more forgiveness and a higher ball flight for higher handicappers

The Mavrik Pro has a 450cc head, less forgiveness and spin and higher emphasis on distance for low handicappers and fast swingers.

PXG 0811 Driver  – Who is it for?

This driver would be a good choice for anyone who is looking for a combination of distance and feel.

The minimal spin of this driver can’t be denied. The deep face works in conjunction with the low, back weighting to produce high-arcing shots that carry further.

This is also a surprisingly long driver for PXG. The sloped crown will help if you have a downward attack on your drives.

Of course, the PXG 0811 feels excellent. But we would expect nothing less from a PXG club.
