PXG 0311 XP Irons Review – Are They Forgiving & Good for High Handicappers?

PXG consistently wows the golf community with their keen attention to detail and painstaking construction process. The PXG 0311 XP irons follow suit but are they good for beginners?

PXG 0311 XP Irons Overview

The PXG 0311 XP irons distinguish themselves through the combination of high-grade materials used to construct them.

The body of these irons is made from 8620 carbon steel which imparts a soft feel. Meanwhile the face is made of maraging steel which is incredibly thin to promote better ball speed. The PXG 0311 XP irons are also the most forgiving in the 0311 lineup.

They have a striking, muscle back design but still impart a good amount of power and forgiveness at impact.

Are PXG 0311 XP Irons Forgiving?

The PXG 0311 XP irons have a very wide sweet spot that our testers loved hitting over and over again.

At first, some of our high handicap testers were very intimidated by these irons; but you wouldn’t know it after an hour of testing. The perimeter weighting of these irons created a very large sweet spot that was yielding great distance thanks to the enhanced flex of the faces.

Are PXG 0311 XP Irons Good for Beginners & High Handicappers?

The PXG 0311 XP irons would be a great choice for high handicappers looking for a set that will still serve them as they improve.

Distance is not an issue with these clubs. Our testers found it very easy to square up with them and whack the ball over 165 yards with the 5 iron. The feel and feedback is also phenomenal. The combination of a forged carbon steel body and a maraging steel face needs to be played to be believed.

PXG has done a good job of creating a premium set of game-improvement irons. Though it should be noted that the PXG 0311 XP’s will do a lot for distance, but not a ton for accuracy.

Should you Buy the PXG 0311 XP or the 0211 Irons?

The 0211 irons certainly have a less premium feel but still offer value to beginners.

The 360 degree undercut face of the PXG 0211 irons provides forgiveness on almost all kinds of mis-hits but feedback is lacking compared to the PXG 0311 XP’s. Overall the PXG 0311 XP irons will do more to improve your game.

PXG 0311 First Impressions

We won’t lie. We were already taken with the reputation of PXG irons and our personal experiences with testing former models. We were excited to test these and right out of the box, they looked amazing.

While it’s debatable what milling the back of the club head does for performance, the aesthetic appeal cannot be denied. The rear head milling makes these irons look beautiful and the stepped muscle back design titillates the imagination.

The PXG 0311 irons share a couple of common features with the 0211 irons. One of them is the polymer core material (called Xcor technology in the 0311 irons).

This material ensures a soft feel at impact but it also enhances distance right off the bat. Players will be able to feel just how explosive the 0311 faces really are after the first swing.

The PXG 0311 irons had an unbeatable feel thanks to the unyielding forging process. They created good distance but left something to be desired in terms of short game accuracy.

PXG 0311 Selling Points

  • Ultra thin maraging steel face
  • Forged 5 times
  • The back of the club heads have been milled
  • Precision weighting near the CG of every club in the set
  • Carbon finish that increases durability
  • Progressive toprail thickness to balance out the heads

Who Are PXG 0311 Irons For?

The PXG 0311 irons were designed for mid to low handicap players who want irons with a premium feel.

The PXG 0311 irons are billed as clubs that do a little bit of everything. However, we found that what they mainly offer is incredible feel and distance.

You simply can’t beat the feel of an iron that was forged 5 times. Of course, this tireless process inherently gives these irons great feedback and some short game accuracy.

The 0311 Family

The 0311 family includes the Tour Performance version which were by far the most workable, the Player version which sacrificed some distance for the sake of forgiveness and the XP version which produced long, straight shots.
