Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons – Are They Forgiving & Good for High Handicappers?

Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons

“The Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons are pretty much everything we have come to expect from a brand that prides itself on manufacturing innovation and premium features”

Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons Overview

“The Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons are some of the most impressive we have ever tested. They are also highly-customizable with a total of 6 adjustable rear weights.”

Now when we say “adjustable” we mean adjustable at fitting. There are 3 adjustable weight ports on the toe side, 2 on the heel side and a large center weight behind the hitting zone that can all be tweaked by your fitter.

So once you have these irons in hand, they will already be tuned to your swing style and speed which is pretty cool. Aside from that though, the Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons undergo an impressive forging process  that gives them an incredibly solid feel.

Right off the bat, the Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons would be a great choice if you are looking for exceptional feel from your irons. Just be prepared to pay a pretty penny for them

Are the Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons Forgiving?

“The Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons are certainly not without their forgiveness features.”

For instance, a lot of the overall mass has been shaved by a rear panel milling process and moved to the perimeter of the club head. The perimeter weighting gives them a very balanced feel and also helps save ball speed on shots that miss the dead-center of the face.

However, it’s worth noting that the Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons have a comparatively compact head profile. While they look great at address and will provide good lateral forgiveness, they might not help too much if you are still struggling with swing accuracy.

Are the Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons Good for Beginners & High Handicappers?

Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons3

“They are good for beginners and high handicappers; but not the best.”

One thing the Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons have going for them is better MOI over the last generation of 0311 irons. The stability is great which is good news for players who tend to mis-hit. The size and length of the blades are really the only issue.

Should you Buy the 0311 or 0211 Z Hybrid Irons?

“If you are a beginner or high handicapper, it would certainly be worth your time to check out the PXG 0211 Z Hybrid Irons.”

As the name suggests, the 0211 Z’s are hybrid irons which means they have larger head profiles and wider soles. For beginners, the 0211 Z’s may be more beneficial. They are significantly more forgiving and will also help with turf interaction.

Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons First Impressions

Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons4

“To be quite honest, we were a little distracted with all the apparent features on the back of these irons.”

The tungsten toe weight and 6 weight ports make for a busy-looking iron when it’s in the bag. However, at address, these irons look spectacular. And it only took us a few swings to feel the quality that went into the manufacturing of these irons.

The Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons feel spectacular and offer a very high degree of workability. We did notice that spin was reduced quite a bit; but that’s actually a good thing for beginners and high handicappers. The long irons play extremely long and don’t spin much at all.

Key Tech

One of the most impressive things about these irons is the technology that went into producing them. Technology like:

The Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons feature maraging steel faces which not only can be milled to be incredibly thin; but is also extremely resilient and feels amazing.

Sole and face perimeter geometry is crisp and consistent thanks to the robotic polishing process that the Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons undergo.

One of the most unique features these irons possess is the inverted U-shaped channel bored behind the face. The channel effectively increases ball speed on shots near the crown while at the same time produces sharper launch angles on the same kinds of shots.

These irons also have an exceptionally soft feel thanks to the soft carbon steel that the bodies were forged from. The soft feel is preferred by better players but can certainly be appreciated by beginners and high handicappers as well.

0311 X Gen4

The 0311 Gen4 irons actually spin at a higher rate than the Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Irons. While this is great for precision around the pin and workability, it’s not necessarily a trait that will benefit high handicappers.
