Pxg 0211 Irons Review – Are They Forgiving & Good For High Handicappers?

PXG is not a brand that you would normally associate with entry-level irons; but their new 0211 irons aim to change all that.

PXG 0211 Irons Overview

PXG seemingly took a page out of the books of other major golf club manufacturers and re-branded some features that make them favorites among beginners and high handicappers.

The PXG 0211 took the basic formula from their popular 0311 forged irons and supplemented it with forgiveness features. First of all, these are muscle back irons. We know what you’re thinking because we thought the same thing: can a muscle back iron be all that forgiving?

After all, the cavity back irons are designed to be more forgiving and yield more distance. We will reserve judgment until a bit later but the PXG 0211 irons are indeed muscle back. This gives them a clean, premium look.

They also feature 360 degree undercut channel that runs along the perimeter of the face.

We found that this feature increases flex around more areas of the face so you are essentially working with a larger than normal sweet spot – at least for a PXG iron.

Are PXG 0211 Irons Forgiving?

To answer this burning question right off the bat, yes the PXG 0211 irons are forgiving. However, they aren’t the most forgiving irons on the market.

One of the obvious points of emphasis with these irons is better feel at impact. This is evidenced by the “COR2” layer of padding that also runs around the perimeter of the face. This helps preserve more energy between the face and the ball; typically resulting in higher ball speeds.

The PXG 0211 irons also feature a hollow body design and a maraging steel face. We found that these 2 features together pushed ball speeds on shots directly in the sweet spot – not so much around the perimeter.

Are PXG 0211 Irons Good For Beginners And High Handicappers?

These are solid game-improvement irons – just don’t expect any miracles.

One of the things you will notice about these irons is that they play long. If you are a mid handicapper you will enjoy the impressive ball speeds you get on accurate shots. However, if you are still struggling with squaring the face and overall accuracy, you aren’t going to see a dramatic improvement.

The PXG 0211 irons do have a larger than average sweet spot compared to other PXG irons; but they aren’t as good for beginners as say the Callaway Big Bertha irons.

Should you Buy the PXG 0211’s or the 0311’s?

The PXG 0311 and 0211 irons have a similar design but they were intended for different players.

To answer this question you have to take an honest inventory of your game. Do you want more greenside spin control? If you do then the 0311’s would be better for you. If you need overall distance though, stick with the PXG 0211’s.

The PXG 0311 irons have been designed to help lower handicap players score, well,  lower. The forged design allows for ridiculous feel and accuracy. The limited offset was also designed to improve the look at point of address – something higher handicap players won’t necessarily appreciate.

PXG 0211 First Impressions

We didn’t think that the PXG 0211 irons were going to perform much differently than other PXG irons we have tested based on the muscle back design.

However, they did. There was a slight improvement in overall feel and forgiveness. We tested the 4 and 5 irons first and found that we were getting better ball speed on shots around the crown and sole than with other models.

The vibration dampening properties of the COR2 insulation also made the long irons more comfortable on full swings. The PXG 0211 irons also produce pretty good launch angles thanks to moderately generous loft.

The short irons didn’t offer much in the way of workability though. Although, that might not be such an issue for beginners and high handicappers. Still, this is something you may want to consider if you plan on investing in the PXG 0211 irons as a long-term set.

PXG 0211 Irons Selling Points

  • The faces are made from incredibly thin and strong miraging steel
  • They do actually play longer than the PXG 0311 irons
  • They have a soft feel thanks to the vibration-insulating liner
  • The long irons produce very low spin
  • The PXG 0211 irons have a slightly larger sweet spot than other PXG irons
  • They have a premium muscle back head shape and hollow-body design

Who are the PXG 0211 Irons for?

While the PXG 0211 irons are billed as forgiving game-improvement irons, we have our doubts.

Yes, high handicappers and beginners will love the soft feel of these irons. Additionally, the low spin rate in the long irons means that high handicappers will be able to get down the fairway quicker.

However, these irons won’t do much for a high handicapper in terms of accuracy. If you are struggling to produce straight shots with your irons, don’t expect much help from the PXG 0211 irons.

In reality, the PXG 0211 irons would actually be better-suited to mid-handicap players.

If you aren’t having much trouble finding the sweet spot with your irons then the PXG 0211’s would be worth a look.

The 0211 Family

Included in the 0211 series of irons from PXG are the 0211 DC and 0211 ST sets. The 0211 DC irons feature a dual layer of polymer inside the head which helps preserve the maximum amount for energy. These are most certainly distance irons for high to mid handicappers.

The 0211 ST irons on the other hand have a solid-body design and have been triple forged for exceptional feel and enhanced workability. These blade irons feature a muscle back design and offer exceptional greenside spin control which makes them ideal for low handicap players.
