Ping G410 – First Impressions

The first thing you are going to notice about the G410 irons is that they are much more attractive looking than the G410’s

The tingsten weighting in the club head and hosel have lowered the COG of the irons and survived to the G425’s as well.

The clubs are less offset and slight smaller headed than the G410’s and the undercut top line offers good turf interaction to turn the heads of the better players.

The clubs also introduced variable face thickness and a flexible hinge for forgiveness on off center hits.

The clubs offer forgiveness, distance and consistency to high and mid handicap players.

An ode to these clubs is that the G425’s are not that much better at all.

In the clubs we have a low Center of Gravity, a wide sole for a bigger sweet spot, forgiveness and echo camping technology for a nice sound even on Mishits.

The Speed Bridge, Speed Pocket and and ultra thin face all account for club head transferring into balls speed for maximum distance, accuracy and tons of forgiveness.

Ping G710 First Impressions

The Ping G710 look impressive right out of the packaging and they continue to impress once you get them on the course.

The first thing you will notice about the Ping G710 irons is the sleek, black hydropearl finish. They also feel pretty substantial in the hand. You may also notice the notched hosel which helps create more discretionary weight to be placed for optimal distance.

The muscle-back design of these irons adds to the good looks and overall performance. This design also makes the Ping G710 irons extremely shapable while at the same time providing valuable feedback on mis-hits.

The head is also slightly larger than the precious G700 irons which may be a benefit for higher handicap players. The Ping G710 irons also feature variable face thickness so you get more distance on dead-center strikes and more forgiveness on shots around the crown and sole.

Combining high-performance maraging steel with the black hydropearl finish make these irons highly desirable for their looks and performance.

Taylormade Sim 2 Max Irons

Category – Distance/ Game Improvement Irons

Sim 2 Irons – First Impressions

Immediately noticeable on these irons is that they look pretty similar to the Sim Max irons but the Cap Back technology does stand out as being more solid.

We weren’t expected much difference in performance either and turned out to be true as well, the Sim 2 Max are slightly longer and lower launching than their predecessor which shows an incremental improvement but nothing overly major to write home about.

The echo dampener and cap back does make these irons feel a good bit smoother in the shorter irons and you can really get a good command of the ball with the forged feeling face.

Thru slot and ICT technology ensure the sweet spot is large and playable and that is another feature that we enjoyed about these clubs.

Overall the clubs do mark an improvement over the Sim Max in terms of distance, feel and control and we recommend giving these clubs a shot before committing to a purchase, because the Sim Max are still competitive and may be available for a keener price.

Best For Mid Handicappers: Ping G425 Vs Taylormade M6

The Ping G425’s offer similar performance to the G410’s with a smaller, more compact blade. The clubs are easy to hit and forgiving but also workable for Mid Handicappers.

The M6 irons are focused on distance primarily but they are also workable and forgiving. An excellent previous generation iron set.

Ping G425 Irons

Category – Game Improvement Irons

Ping G425 Irons – First Impressions

After taking 2020 off, the G425 Irons are a much anticipated upgrade to the G410’s and the first thing you notice with these irons is that the heads are smaller and more compact.

The irons incorporate two weights, a visible screw at the front of the clubhead and a weight in the hosel. This, coupled with the wide and cascading sole allows a quality ball launch angle.

Ping have gone for the metal wood style material for the first time in a set of irons and the variable face thickness allows for a lot of forgiveness and ball speed on any strike, even when you hit the ball off center.

They also have a multi material badge filling in the cavity at the back to dampen any vibrations on mishits.

The irons have a slight bit of offset for forgiveness but you are going to get plenty of feel from these especially from Irons you would classify as game improvement.

Taylormade M6 Irons

Category – Players Distance Irons

Taylormade M6 – First Impressions

The Taylormade M6 irons represented a significant break through in the world of golf with the introduction of the speed bridge which adds stability, ball speed and smooth impacts, even on mishits.

The sweet spot on the M6 is massive, allowing you to hit it straight and far consistently.

While there is excellent forgiveness in the clubs, they are certainly built for ball speed and distance and that is the main reason for the speed bridge and the Speed pocket on the underside of the club and filling in the cavity on the ball.

The face is ‘Speed Injection’ for an amazing connection with the ball and better distance.

A deep undercut and low COG allow an easy launch and the High MOI of the irons maximizes speed and performance.

Still, one of the best iron sets on the market, for sure.

Best For Mid To Low Handicappers: Ping i210 Vs Taylormade P790

The Ping i210 are players irons focused on performance for the better players and they are the most popular Ping irons on tour. They are workable but also have a touch of forgiveness for a blade.

The Taylormade P790’s are players irons but since their upgrade in 2021 to include a hollow head filled with peed foam, they are also more forgiving.

Ping i210 Irons

Category: Player’s Irons

Ping i210 Irons First Impressions

We tested the Ping i210’s after the i59’s and we were taken aback at how much the Ping i210 irons kept up with the seemingly more premium set.

Of course, you get the forgiveness from the elastomer insert which makes more contact space on the face. Mid handicappers will also like the larger head of the Ping i210 irons.

But the machined face grooves are really where a lot of the gap between these irons is made up. You get surprising side spin control in the shorter irons of this set – just like with the i59’s.

That being said, you will need a swing speed of about 92 MPH or above to make long par 5’s with these irons. Neither the Ping i210 irons or the i59’s play long enough to write home about.

The Ping i210 irons performed valiantly when compared to the i59’s but it’s hard to ignore the absence of the feel that comes from a soft carbon steel forged body.

Distance: 92/100

Accuracy: 94/100

Forgiveness: 92/100

Feel & Control: 94/100

Taylormade P790 Irons

Category – Forged Irons

Taylormade P790 – First Impressions

The first thing to notice about the P790 irons is the compact, forged heads that come in a shape and style that will suit the better players.

Despite the players feel of the irons, they also come packed with technology that will add distance and forgiveness like the Thru Slot speed pocket, speed foam and inverted cone technology which allows more flex on impact.

The forged irons are actually a hollow construction, filled with speed foam which allows much greater distances to be achieved than the original P790’s and the tungsten weighting keeps the CG low for an easy launch for an iron of this type.

The original P790 irons, released in 2017, were definitely for the players but with the remodelling in 2019, these can also be used for mid handicappers looking to test the waters of players irons.

All in all, definitely not for the high handicappers.

Distance: 92/100

Accuracy: 95/100

Forgiveness: 89/100

Feel And Control: 96/100

Best For Low Handicappers: Ping i59 Vs Taylormade P770

The i59 are the latest addition to the Ping family and they are aimed at the better players. Workable and accurate, it will take a consistent striker to hit these well.

The P770 are forged blades for Taylormade that are aimed at precision for the better players. Highly rated and well reviewed, an excellent set of clubs.

Ping i59 Irons

Category: Player’s Performance

Ping i59 Irons First Impressions

The Ping i59 irons felt good off the deck thanks to a strong aluminum insert that enhances feel while pushing the ball for better speeds.

What we were most surprised at though was the forgiveness of these player’s performance irons. Even though the i59’s are smaller, they are comparably forgiving on off-center shots.

A lot of weight is saved at the center of the heads of these clubs thanks to the super thin aluminum. That weight is displaced around the perimeter so you get more distance on strikes away from the sweet spot.

While you still need to be able to make consistent contact with the ball, you get a lot of help at that point even if you aren’t square up to it.

The Ping i59 irons are a good mixture of forgiveness, distance and short-game control. They don’t feel too bad either.

Taylormade P770 Irons

Category – Player’s Irons/Distance Irons

Taylormade P770 First Impressions

The first thing you will notice is the clear line of site you have to the ball thanks to the limited offset of these irons.

When you first take a look at the Taylormade P770 irons, you don’t automatically think distance.

That’s because they lack most of the visual features of your typical distance irons.

You will probably think that they are great for accurate approaches, shaping shots and higher spin rates; but not so much for distance.

After you take your first swing with 7 iron though (featuring 33 degrees of loft) you will be able to feel the speedy engine behind these irons which have a softer feel.

The Taylormade P770 irons feature a forged hollow body design that allow for maximum face flex.

The face is forged from 4140 carbon steel and is wrapped seamless style around the body which is also made from carbon steel.

You also get a whopping 46 grams of tungsten to fortify the sweet spot and launch the ball high and with workability.

Just because these are mid to low handicap player irons doesn’t mean that Taylormade has left out additional forgiveness features.

For instance, the ICT technology is progressive throughout the set which means that you get an optimized sweet spot location as you work down the set.

The Taylormade P770 have to be swung to believe. They look like players irons but they also have a lot of forgiveness features.

Not quite as long as some other irons but plenty else on offer with the P770’s.

Distance: 90/100

Accuracy: 95/100

Forgiveness: 91/100

Best Professional Irons: Ping Blueprint Vs Taylormade P7MC

The Ping Blueprint irons are specially crafted irons for use by the best players in the game. You will a very precise and consistent strike to game these.

The Taylormade P7MC have a slim design with precision and workability as standard but slightly more forgiving than the Ping Blueprints.

Ping Blueprint Irons – Best For Tour Players

Category: Player’s Performance

Ping Blueprint Irons First Impressions

These were immediately some of the finest irons we have ever had the pleasure of swinging. The feel of the one-piece forging cannot be imitated whether you’re attacking a long par 5 or on a short approach to the green.

The quality and precision that went into these clubs is immediately apparent from the first swing. The loft is a bit understated in the long irons but we found that this helps with trajectory control.

The Ping Blueprint irons also have machined face grooves for acte spin control around. The machined grooves coupled with the forged 8620 carbon steel (which feels extremely soft by the way) makes for unprecedented control around the green.

Of course, you will need a good swing speed and plenty of accuracy to be able to get any use from these irons.

“The feel is certainly the star of the show here but a close runner up is the distance and spin control you get in the short irons.”

Taylormade P7MC Irons

Category: Player’s Performance

Taylormade P7MC Irons First Impressions

What struck us immediately was the soft, acute feel that you get from these irons – even on full swings.

The forging process that Taylormade used to construct the P7MC (and P7MB) irons is meticulous and it shows from your very first strike.

You get incredible consistency across the face and solid feedback on chips and full swings.

We also really liked the hybrid muscle/cavity back design. It looks clean at address and provides a bit more distance than you would expect from a player’s iron.

The Taylormade P7MC irons are a great entry point to forged irons if you have just broken into low handicap territory. They will make the transition to player’s irons less jarring for you.

The P Family

The P line of irons from Taylormade is expansive and has something for virtually every type of player.

However, along with the P7TW irons, the Taylormade P7MC and the P7MB’s won’t do much for you if you don’t already have a fast swing speed.
