Ping i525 Vs. Taylormade p790 Irons Comparison & Review
It’s hard to argue with the feel of a forged iron. There is more work and more love that go into forged irons. Forged irons are also more consistent and tend to be better for mid to low handicap players. If you are in the market for a new set of forged irons we want to help.
While not everyone will be able to get a fitting, we have the next best thing for you. We went out and tested two exceptional sets of forged irons: the Taylormade P790’s and the Ping i525 irons. Take a look at what we found below.
Taylormade P790 Irons Overview
The Taylormade P790 irons are forged from 8620 carbon steel.
The forged carbon steel not only makes for an incredibly thin body; but it also imparts a comfortable, soft feel to full swings. These irons feel great at impact and feedback very well. The Taylormade P790’s are also hollow-body irons. This helps keep the weight down.
The P790’s are a joy to swing. They’re nice and light and actually produced an increase in swing speed for some of our testers. They also sport an L-shaped face insert in order to preserve ball speed low on the face and out towards the toe.
The P790’s were surprisingly forgiving for muscle back irons that sport a relatively short blade length. Very workable and satisfying overall.
Ping i525 Irons Overview
The Ping i525 irons are also forged, muscle back irons in the familiar player’s performance profile.
Yes, that means little offset and a compact head. These irons also have tungsten weights in the shaft tip and the toe. This makes for great balance on the downswing and does quite a bit to increase forgiveness as well.
The face was forged from maraging steel which is already incredibly resilient and thin. Much like the “Speed Pocket” of many Taylormade irons, the Ping i525’s sport an internal undercut near the sole to allow for more face flex.
In fact, the Ping i525 irons actually played longer than the P790’s by an average of 13 yards from 4-iron testing.
While the soft feel of the Taylormade P790 irons is very endearing and their turf interaction was a bit better, we still like the overall performance of the Ping i525’s. They play long and give you plenty of spin control in the short irons.

Ping i525 Irons – First Impressions
The first thing to notice about the Ping i525 is the sleek looking players shape at address while the soles are still thick enough to offer distance and a towering ball flight.
The hollow body ‘Ballistic face’ construction hasd Polymer injected strategically on the inner side of the 14-7 stainless steel face for an enhanced sound and feel.
Perimeter weighting in the toe, with a visible screw and the shaft strectch the sweet spot and the face in dynamically created to deliver excellent balls speeds.
These irons feel and sound amazing but you are not going to get the same levels of feel as you will with the players irons.
Due to the higher launch and 4 extra grooves being added to the club, there is more workabilty in the longer irons and control in the shorter irons.
The player profile looks really nice in the i525’s at address, very similar to a players iron but it delivers on ball speed with the dynamic, miraging steel construction.
The hydropearl 2.0 ensures these irons perform well in wet as well as dry conditions and the additional flex in the face completes an excellent new set of Hollow Body Players Distance Irons.
Taylormade P790 – First Impressions
The first thing to notice about the P790 irons is the compact, forged heads that come in a shape and style that will suit the better players.
Despite the players feel of the irons, they also come packed with technology that will add distance and forgiveness like the Thru Slot speed pocket, speed foam and inverted cone technology which allows more flex on impact.
The forged irons are actually a hollow construction, filled with speed foam which allows much greater distances to be achieved than the original P790’s and the tungsten weighting keeps the CG low for an easy launch for an iron of this type.
The original P790 irons, released in 2017, were definitely for the players but with the remodelling in 2019, these can also be used for mid handicappers looking to test the waters of players irons.
All in all, definitely not for the high handicappers.

Aidan Lehane here, I’m a Mid-low handicap golfer who has made tremendous progress in breaking 90 in just over 1 year of playing golf seriously.
I get out to the course or range as often as possible and review all the equipment I’ve come across on this blog.
