So far, it has been easy to track the progression of the “i” series of irons from Ping.

The Ping i210 irons got shrunk down and refined in the Ping i230 irons; but the Ping i525 irons sort of changed direction.

It looked like the trajectory was headed towards more compact, player’s performance irons. But the Ping i525’s represent an interesting divergence in which Ping places a higher emphasis on forgiveness.

This can make it very difficult to decide whether to choose the Ping i230 or the Ping i525’s but never fear, we’re here to help.

Ping i525 Irons Overview

“The Ping i525 irons have an upgraded face material from the Ping i230’s – and they also do away with the activated elastomer insert.”

This in itself was a rather perplexing move. On the one hand, you have a serious upgrade in face construction with the forged maraging steel used to make the Ping i525.

But on the other hand they did away with the activated elastomer that gave the Ping i230’s a softer feel and replaced it with a less effective polymer material.

The result, after having tested both irons, is that the Ping i525’s play less hot off the face and provide less feedback.

However, the extreme perimeter weighting makes them a bit more accessible to mid handicappers. The Ping i525 irons still feature the micromax groove design that lower handicap players loved in the Ping i230’s.

Ping i230’s Overview

First of all, the grooves in the small irons have been improved. With the i210 irons, you had sharp, U-shaped grooves.

With the Ping i230’s, you get milled micromax grooves which are tighter and perform better in wet conditions.

The Ping i230 irons also have slightly more rounded edges when compared to the i210’s. This allows for improved turf interaction.

Compared to the Ping i525 irons, the Ping i230’s have a softer feel and better control – especially in the long irons. However, it should be noted that the Ping i230 irons have slightly weaker lofts than the i525’s.

Ping i525 Irons – First Impressions

The Ping i525 irons first struck us as gorgeous irons with a tremendous feel.

Most of that comes from the forged maraging steel face. It’s also important to note though, that the body’s of these irons are made from 17-4 grade stainless steel. This gives them a metal-wood flexing effect so they are no slouches in the distance department either.

You just have to have a fast swing speed to get the most distance out of them. Still, the feel is something you will be able to notice right away. Whether from the tee or off the deck, the feedback is great and they give off a deep, solid and satisfying sound when you pure the ball.

Ping i230 Irons First Impressions

First impressions of the i230’s is that they are definitely players irons.

They have small compact heads which allow players to shape their shots and hit with supreme accuracy.

Higher handicap players won’t be able to hit well at all with these irons but the better players should be hitting them with consistency and tight dispersion.

In terms of improvement from the i210’s, they are longer and the long irons are more compact and player friendly.

The 5 piece construction and the elastomer allow for improved sound and feel with the weight savings used to lower the COG and increase the MOI meaning players should be hitting longer shots with increased workability.

The 4 piece Cavity Badge, Hydropearl finish, Micromax grooves and tungsten weight all improve the forgiveness, control, sound and feel that players can achieve.
