Ping i525 Irons Review – Are They Forgiving, Are The Blades, What Handicap?

Ping is one company whoss production line of new clubs has been slowed in recent times but finally we are getting back to normal with the 2022 new release ‘Players Distance’ iron from Ping in the i525’s.

The i525’s represent a long awaited and much anticipated upgrade on the i500’s, which debuted in 2018 and the i525’s do represent a big improvement on the irons that came before.

The goal with the i525’s was to give the extra distance of a players distance iron but to also represent to type of feel, sound and consistency that could take these clubs to the next level.

Since the Hollow Body Players Distance iron revolution is now in full swing it was about time Ping got in on the act to take the other big names in the category like the Taylormade P790’s.

Following on from the i59 players iron from 2021, the i525 has good amount in common with the i59 as far as it’s key features go.

Key Features:

Tungsten Weighting: A visible Tungsten screw in the toe and another in the hosel, stretch the sweet spot on the small and compact head for more forgiveness.

Injected Polymer: These are hollow body irons and to ensure that you get the feel and sound of a players iron, EAV polymer has been strategically injected into the back of the face.

Maraging Steel Face: The steel face is more flexible now and this gives extra speed due to the rebound and it also gives more consistency from the face and eliminates ‘fliers’.

4 More Grooves: Like the Ping i59’s, the i525 have 4 more grooves than their predcessor and they achieve this by fitting them closer together and they are CNC milled.

Forged Steel Body: The forged irons are made with a 17-4 stainless steel body and the miraging face insert gives excellent ball speeds and forgiveness for an iron with this profile.

Dynamic Design: The blade length is slimed down from the i59 irons and extra emphasis has been placed on the optimal offset and top line thickness of the clubs to attract the better player ands the internal sole cut also increases the consistency of the clubs.

Players Profile: These irons are thin at the top line and look very inviting to the players among us at address. When you hit them however, you can get about a clubs worth of extra distance than a traditional players iron.

Hydropearl 2.0 Finish: the clubs are finished with a hydropearl 2.0 finish which ensures the clubs play well in both dry and wet conditions.

Are The Ping i525 Forgiving?

The ping i525 irons are very forgiving for an iron of their shape and for how they look at address.

The hollowbody design, perimeter weighting and dynamic, maraging steel ‘Ballistic’ face ensure that you can get a good ball flight on a large percentage of areas on the face.

That being said, the blade lenght of the i525’s is a lot smaller than a game improvement iron and you will still need to strike the ball consistently well to consider gaming them.

Are The i525 Irons Blades?

The Ping i525’s are technically blades but they have more of muscle back design.

The clubs look awesome at address and deliver far more in terms of distance and forgivness.

What Handicap Are The Ping i525 Irons For?

Answer: 15-5

It’s always tough to give a handicap recommendation for irons, but it is clear that better and more consistent strikers will have a better time with the i525’s.

The have a slender blade length and there is not as much room for error with the irons so will they will not be suitable for high handicappers.

Mid handicappers who are happy with their iron play and want to take another step towards a players iron and dont want to sacrifice the extra distance will do well with these irons.

Low handicappers shoule find good utility in these irons, the feel and sound great for a players distance iron but maybe not as soft as real players iron. They are controllable in the long irons and workable in the shorter irons.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see the longer irons in a couple of tour players bags this season.

Ping i525 Irons – First Impressions

The first thing to notice about the Ping i525 is the sleek looking players shape at address while the soles are still thick enough to offer distance and a towering ball flight.

The hollow body ‘Ballistic face’ construction hasd Polymer injected strategically on the inner side of the 14-7 stainless steel face for an enhanced sound and feel.

Perimeter weighting in the toe, with a visible screw and the shaft strectch the sweet spot and the face in dynamically created to deliver excellent balls speeds.

These irons feel and sound amazing but you are not going to get the same levels of feel as you will with the players irons.

Due to the higher launch and 4 extra grooves being added to the club, there is more workabilty in the longer irons and control in the shorter irons.

The player profile looks really nice in the i525’s at address, very similar to a players iron but it delivers on ball speed with the dynamic, miraging steel construction.

The hydropearl 2.0 ensures these irons perform well in wet as well as dry conditions and the additional flex in the face completes an excellent new set of Hollow Body Players Distance Irons.

The i525 Family of Irons

The i525 is set to be the only new iron release from Ping in 2022 but it does pack quite a punch and if you have been looking for more distance from a players or maybe want to tip your toes in the players iron market, this are a great choice.

The i59 irons which came out last year have a thinner profile again resulting in more workability, less feel and less distance.
