Ping have made some serious changes with the G740’s moving away from the high shine chrome of the G730 to a more refined matte Hydropearl finish that looks premium and sophisticated.

The head is 3% longer than the G730 with a shorter hosel which makes the blade look even bigger at address. The sole is absolutely massive too, 22% wider than the G440 with a dual camber design that glides through the turf like an insurance policy against fat shots.

These are cast 17-4 stainless steel with a new three piece PurFlex cavity badge that dampens vibrations without stiffening the face. The feel is much more refined compared to the often clicky sound of the G730’s.

The dual camber sole is borrowed from better player irons but optimized here for maximum forgiveness. The trailing edge relief means the club doesn’t dig in when you catch it heavy which is crucial for higher handicappers.

Ping have also added a 3/4 inch length progression in the 5 and 6 irons to help bridge the gap for players who struggle with hybrids. The 56 degree wedge is inspired by the iconic Eye 2 wedge and is designed to be a magic wand in the sand.

Forgiveness is outstanding with only marginal carry loss on low or toe strikes. The MOI is increased by 5% with tungsten weighting low and deep in the head.

The G730’s were criticized for below average accuracy and dispersion despite being a phenomenal distance iron. That’s the main area where the G740’s have improved things significantly.

The G740’s are the clear winner here for most golfers even though the G730’s edge them out slightly on raw distance.

The G740’s fly higher, spin more and have much better stopping power on the greens with that steeper descent angle. The extra 500 RPM of spin combined with the higher launch means your shots are actually holding greens instead of rolling off the back.

More importantly the G740’s are far more consistent and accurate. The dispersion is nearly half the size of the G730’s which means your mishits are staying much closer to your target line.

The dual camber sole on the G740 is a game changer for turf interaction. It glides through the grass and maintains speed even on fat strikes whereas the G730 could dig a bit more.
