Ping G440 Vs. Takomo 101 Irons Comparison Overview

G440 Vs Takomo 101

Today we are looking at two options for high to mid handicappers who want to maximise their distance, forgiveness and consistency.

1 of these irons is a traditional game improvement cavity back from one of the worlds leading brands and that is the G440.

The Takomo 101 is a game improvement iron that looks more like a traditional blade yet offers a large chunky head for distance and forgiveness.

The Ping costs the same as all the other leading brands while Takomo offers the same performance for a lower price, lets dive in.

The G440 Overview

Ping G440 Irons 3

The G440’s are a traditional cavity back game improvement iron which offers all round distance, forgiveness and consistency for high handicappers.

It inspires confidence at address due to its large top line and chunky soles and the noticeable tungsten screw in the toe is matched by another weight in the heel for ultimate forgiveness on off center shots.

Ping have perfected their Variable face technology and no matter where you hit the ball on the face you should get a similar distance.

The clubs offer a towering ball flight with plenty of spin to go along with the distance on offer.

You’ve got all the premium features in these irons and the wedges have been redesigned for more workability.

The irons are higher flying and with more spin than the Takomo’s which are very long and a little more unpredictable.

Takomo have certainly exploded onto the golf scene with premium quality clubs for half the price.

The 101’s are the most traditional game improvement irons out of the range even though they are shaped as traditional blade like irons.

They are hollow bodied irons with a 431 carbon steel and a thin face for max explosiveness.

There is a deep and low COG to get the balls in the air effortlessly and plenty of loft to produce epic distances.

The irons are long straight and forgiving, very easy to hit and confidence inspiring.

They were longer and lower flighted than the G440’s but still with plenty of spin to stop the ball on the greens.

Ping G440 Vs Takomo 101 Irons

These irons are really close in terms of performance especially with the Takomo’s costing a lot less.

For us the Pings were more forgiving and gave a tighter distance dispersion than the Takomo’s.

The Takomo’s have a nice soft feel and go really far when hit flush but we found the distances a little less predictable on off center shots. There is a little bit of a gapping issue as you get to the shorter irons and wedges.

Overall, try both at a fitting and see which one suits your game better.

Takomo 101T – First Impressions

Takomo 101T Irons2

“I loved the sleek looks and how the Takomo 101T’s occupy a nice middle-ground between players performance and game improvement.”

I’ve talked a lot about forgiveness so far but one of the first things I noticed about these irons was how workable they are.

I was able to affect different shot shapes so long as the lie was favorable. That brings me to another, less fun point.

The turf interaction wasn’t great with these irons. The leading edge is a bit blunted so you really have to keep yourself from digging.

But that’s really the only weakness that stuck out to me during my testing session.

Overall, the Takomo 101T irons look great and they perform consistently.

I could tell right away that these irons would be great for anyone who wants to increase the distance on the fairway or from the tee.

Category: Game-Improvement/Players Distance

Ping G440 Irons First Impressions

Ping G440 Irons
The first thing to notice about the Ping G440’s is that the head has a much more player friendly profile with a shortened blade height and length.

The face is thinner too and the Pur Flex Badge is visible smaller and less cavity like. The Top Line is still thick enough to inspire confidence but its also camoflaged to give that players friendly feel.

The longer irons have longer shafts which is great for distance and launch, especially if you are going with the power spec lofts. Plenty of Mid to Low Handicappers will fancy these Long Irons.

The visible Tungsten screw remains and this stretches the sweet spot along the face and you will barely notice any difference in performance when you slightly miss the center and the slight offset remains too to combat a slice.

The Hydropearl finish has also been upgraded and the result is irons that look a lot nice in the bag.

The G440’s are a worthy upgrade of the G430’s and will be extremely popular in 2025 and beyond.

Who Are the Takomo 101T Irons for?

Takomo 101T Irons3

“The Takomo 101T irons would be good for 15-22 handicappers who are chiefly concerned with distance.”

That’s because all but the most severe mis-hits go virtually unpunished.

There wasn’t significant drop-off in ball speed between my perfect strikes and those struck closer to the heel.

The hollow-body design and milled face go a long way towards making sure the ball gets launched far.

And yet, there is a good amount of workability in these irons for mid handicappers.

The blade is small enough and square enough behind the ball to allow for accurate shot manipulation.

Plus, the Takomo 101T irons cost less than $600 for the entire set so they would be good for players on a budget as well.

Who Are The Ping G440 Irons for?

Ping G440 Irons 5

It’s clear to see that the Ping G440’s are less game improvement and more player focussed than the G430’s.

The shorter blades make them look much better in the bag of Mid Handicap golfers who want workability, distance, stopping power and maintain the forgiveness that Ping is known for. The G440’s will compete with the I530s for Mid Handicappers and the G730’s will still suit the uber high handicappers. The G440’s are also great for High Handicappers who want to improve their golf over time. We can even see low handicappers carrying the long irons in their bag for the extra forgivness and distance. There is also Power, retro and Hl launch versions available to suit all swing speeds.
