Ping G425 3 Wood Vs Ping G425 5 Wood Comparison Overview
A lot of players struggle with deciding which club to carry in their bags: a 3-wood or a 5-wood.
A 3-wood works great off the tee and gives you the distance you need to tackle long par 4’s.
On the other hand, a good 5-wood will give you the height you need to land softly on the green. So why not carry both if you can? Both clubs have a lot of upside so the only question left is, ‘what kind of woods should you buy?’ Today we will help you sort through your options by comparing one of the best woods in the game: the Ping G425.
Ping G425 3 Wood Overview
“The Ping G425 3-wood is 14.5° and has a raw shaft length of 43”. It sports a 176cc head which weighs 213 grams.”
Both the 3 and 5-wood feature a maraging steel face and a tungsten sole weight to pull the CG down. The Ping G425 3-wood in particular delivers a crisp, satisfying sound off the tee. I was also getting very good ball speeds from the box.
Off the deck, I found that the Ping G425 3-wood was prone to digging and the flight became a little more erratic. My wide cuts were turning into slices when I wasn’t very careful. This obviously affected both carry and total distance.
Ping G425 5 Wood Overview
“The Ping G425 5-wood is 17.5° and is 42 ½“ long. The head volume is 167cc with a head weight of 218 grams.”
My digging problem off the deck was completely alleviated with the Ping G425 5-wood. The launch was nice and high and I was able to stick the green easier than with the 3-wood; but all this is only to be expected.
What stood out more to me is that I was able to reign my swing in a bit more with the Ping G425 5-wood. Launch was more consistent and my divergence was tighter off the deck. Off the tee, I had to alter my swing too much to make the Ping G425 5-wood viable for my first shot.
“In general, the Ping G425 fairways are very forgiving and offer really good distance. But I would strongly recommend the Ping G425 5-wood for high handicappers if they have to make a choice between a 3-wood and a 5-wood.”
Ping G425 Fairway Wood First Impressions
We were very excited to start swinging with these woods.
They were big, beefy and we could tell right away that they were gonna play long. We’re glad to report that we were not wrong.
The Ping G Family of Woods
Included in the prestigious G family of fairway woods from Ping is the G400. This is the superior G wood if you are looking to hit more greens from distance as it launches incredibly high thanks to a machined tungsten weight.
