Ping G400 Hybrid Review 2023 – Is it Good for High Handicappers & Forgiving?

Ping G400 Hybrid

“For a long time, the Ping G400 hybrid has been one of our favorite hybrids based on looks alone.”

We honestly love the black/bronze color scheme. And the shaping is reminiscent of past “G” series hybrids which we have also been long-time fans of – very square at address and never too bulky.

But as anyone who has ever played golf knows, looks aren’t everything when it comes to clubs.

So does the Ping G400 hybrid have anything to offer apart from a pretty face? We answer this question in the following review.

What Year Did the Ping G400 Hybrid Come Out?

The Ping G400 hybrid was released in 2017 which makes it six years old at the time of this writing.

We mention the Ping G400’s age because it has held up remarkably well. Some clubs simply don’t age well and get eclipsed by newer models.

But the features, looks and performance of the Ping G400 hybrid holds up well against hybrids released this year. Speaking of features…

Key Features

Maraging Steel Face

If we had to choose one word to describe the feel of this hybrid it would be “swift.” It looks and feels swift on the downswing.

One contributor to this fast feeling is the maraging steel face. Maraging steel can be machined incredibly thin and still provide strength and stability on full swings.

It’s a near-ideal material to use for premium club faces.

Crown Turbulators

This is a feature common in Ping woods and to be honest, we’re not sure how much it helps with swing speed.

However, the intention of the “turbulators” which are essentially fins on the crown is to reduce drag.

However, even if they don’t increase club head speed they still work well to frame and align the ball.

17-4 Stainless Steel Crown

To quite literally top off the lightweight design of this hybrid, Ping chose to use 17-4 stainless steel for the crown.

The steel has been cast to be thin but also to provide overall head stability.

Is it Good for High Handicappers?

“Like past G series hybrids, the Ping G400 is more or less point and shoot.”

This is probably the best performance aspect for high handicappers. The shot dispersion this hybrid offers is excellent.

For example, we didn’t see off-line divergence that exceeded 12 yards during our testing session.

So if you are the type of high handicapper who struggles a lot to stay out of the rough, the Ping G400 hybrid will be a game-changer.

Also, the Ping G400 hybrid sits really nice behind the ball. It gives you the confidence you need as a high handicapper to take your full swing.

More importantly, our testers found that it was very easy to turn the club over at impact. It was almost hard to produce a mis-hit and even when we did, we didn’t experience a huge drop-off in ball speed.

Not that it is pertinent to high handicappers, but it is worth mentioning that there is a moderate level or workability in this hybrid. Our better testers were able to fade the ball a bit at will.

Available Shafts

  • Ping Alta CB 70 (Soft regular, regular, stiff, extra stiff flex)
  • Ping Tour 85 (Regular, stiff, extra stiff flex)

Is the Ping G400 Worth it?

“If you’re in the market for a Ping hybrid, you would be hard-pressed to find a better one than the Ping G400.”

It plays longer than past entries into the G series of hybrids and it is at least as forgiving as Ping’s most forgiving hybrids.

That’s pretty high praise. We would say that the Ping G400 hybrid is definitely worth it for both high and mid handicap players.

There is workability to be had – and there is the ability to shoot straight for those who need it.

Ping G400 Hybrid First Impressions

Ping G400 Hybrid2

“Even after re-testing the Ping G400 hybrid, we are still enamored with the way it looks.”

But going a little deeper, we really like the semi-pear shape of the head. It has a modern look while intimating a classic vibe.

More importantly though, the shape makes it very easy to align the ball and square up.

There is no traditional alignment marker but the distance from the inner “turbulator” on the toe side to the inner “turbulator” on the heel side is roughly the width of a golf ball.

So the turbulators more or less act as an alignment marker.

Is the Ping G400 Hybrid Adjustable?

No. There is no adjustable weight and the Ping G400 hybrid does not come with an adjustable hosel either.

Instead, there is a fixed machined weight placed in the back of the club head. This weight makes for a low CG.

What is the Difference Between the Ping G400 and G25 Hybrid?

The Ping G400 is upgraded in almost every way over the G25.

The most notable difference is that the Ping G400 has a higher-quality, thinner maraging steel face.

The turbulators have also been added to the Ping G400 hybrid whereas the Ping G25 hybrid has a completely smooth crown.

Who is the Ping G400 Hybrid for?

Ping G400 Hybrid

“The Ping G400 would be great for a wide array of handicappers.”

It may sound far-fetched but we can honestly see single-digit handicappers as well as 20+ handicappers getting good use out of this hybrid.

To put it in figures, the Ping G400 hybrid would be good for handicaps 9 through about 22. After all, who couldn’t use good distance, straight shots and workable launch.

The Ping G400 hybrid even feels nice through the rough.
