Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal Irons Review – Specs, Lofts & What Handicaps

The new Mizuno Irons for 2023 have already hit the shelves in late 2022 and there are some big improvements to note straight out of the gate, like the 4335 Nickel Chromoly Material which is the 35% stronger than the JPX921’s material.

Before we jump into the review, it is worth noting that these cast irons come in 3 flavors – Hot Metal High Launch, Hot Metal and Hot Metal Pro.

JPX 923 Hot Metal High Launch Irons

Having studied over 350,000 golfers, Mizuno noticed that a lot of golfers have slower swing speeds and they set about to create the new High launch version for the player’s profile they are seeing in testing.

The High Launch version will help slower swing speeds to get the ball in the air more easily and have a decent flight path.

JPX 923 Hot Metal Irons

The Hot Metal irons are all about ball speed, distance, forgiveness, and stopping power.

JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro Irons

The Hot Metal Pro’s are going to be more compact, less offset and more workable for better players while still packing a ton of speed and distance.

All of the cast irons are released in late 2022, with the Forged and Tour versions coming on the scene in early 2023.

Key Features Of The Hot Metal JPX923 Irons

4335 Nickel Chromoly

The engineers of the new Miznuos were so impressed with the ball speed generated by the new material that they immediately went back to focusing on stopping power and control.

The clubs have a one-piece cup face construction which adds to the high launch and stopping power of the irons.

The material is 35% stronger than its predecessor and this allows the thinnest part of the face to be extended by 18%. This translates into more speed, distance, and accuracy from shots that you don’t catch flush in the center.

Following this trend, the club face is also 8% thinner resulting in a better energy transfer and more ball speed from a more springy face.

Deep Center Of Gravity

The center of gravity sits towards the back of the head in the JPX 923’s and with the increased bounce on all of the 923’s, you can expect a higher launch and improved stopping power.

V- Chassis Backing

The clubs are backed by a Vibration Controlling V-Chassis. This ensures the stability of the clubs and ensures that the clubs are serious contenders in the game improvement market for players seeking speed and forgiveness.

Stronger Lofts – More Bounce

Very similar to what we have seen in the Ping G430’s, which have also been released for the 2023 season.

This naturally results in more distance and better-stopping power, combined with the new material means an elite-level speed cavity back for mid to high-handicap players.

Sound And Feel

All the elements working together give these irons a powerful feeling and a rewarded slap sound when hit flush.

The irons feel incredibly pure when struck flush with the V-Chassis eliminating the vibrations and sending the ball miles down the fairway.

White Satin Brush Finish

The clubs are finished with a White Satin Brush material which reduces the glare from the sunshine and completes the all-around premium feel of the clubs.

Better Shaping

These clubs look excellent at address. They are slightly offset, depending on the version and they are more sleek and compact than the JPX921’s.

The irons look excellent and don’t have any of the oversized game improvement, big and chunky kind of look of a beginner’s iron.

With that being said, they are also not the most forgiving option for beginners and high handicappers.

50 Plus Custom Shafts

The JPX 923’s come with a ton of different shaft options that will synch these clubs to your game perfectly.

They are built for custom and the 3d Shaft Optimizing technology ensures you get the ultimate fitting for the new irons.

The Regular Hot Metals with a light, high launching shaft may be a better bet for some golfers than the HL version for instance.

More Workability In Short Irons

The long irons are long, straight, and forgiving while the shorter irons are more workable, with higher spin rates around the greens.

The irons also come with matching wedges to get the absolute most from your game.

The JPX 923 Irons Overall

A big improvement from Mizuno  and these irons are going to be perfect for players who want distance, forgiveness and stopping power.

The irons feel, sound, and perform at an elite level and you should see an increase in distance and stopping power with the club specs.

The HL version is perfect for seniors and those with slower swing speeds.

The Hot Metal version is great for players with a 25 handicap and below. Not the most forgiving on the market but great for distance and control.

The Pro version will suit lower-handicap players looking for distance with more control and workability. The Hot Metal Pros are likely to compete with the Forged and Tour versions, but also the Mizuno 225 Pro Irons.

Overall a definite improvement from Mizuno and we expect these clubs to be popular at local courses all over the world.

Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal Irons First Impressions

Straight out of the gate the JpX 923 look great, they are not big and chunky like some game improvement irons, but they are not the most forgiving irons on the market either. One thing is for sure, the 923 Hot Metal irons are built for distance.

The irons come in 3 flavors:

JPX 923 Hot Metal High Launch for slower swing speeds to get the ball in the air.

JPX 923 Hot Metal Perfect for Mid Handicappers looking for distance, forgiveness and stability.

JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro – Aimed at consistent iron strikers with more precision, control and workability. Likely to compete with the forged version and the

The next thing that stands out is the V-Chassis on the back which completes the excellent looks of the irons.

It also adds stability to the club face, improves the feel and dampens vibrations on any mishits.

These clubs are faster thanks to the new Nikol Chromoly material that the cup face, and cavity back designed clubs are made with.

It is 35% stronger which a stronger impact and more distance. It also allows the club face to be 8% thinner meaning a better energy transfer. The thinnest point of the face is now also 18% larger and the bigger sweet spot results in better shots on the off-center strikes.

More bounce and stronger lofts also add to the effect of more distance and a higher loft. The extra bounce helps to generate a higher ball flight.

While not being the most forgiving of game improvement irons, they look excellent at the address and offer a ton of distance for players with moderate to average swing speeds and beyond.

The Hot Metal irons are not going to be the best option for beginners and inconsistent strikers but they will be excellent for anybody looking for maximum distance and excellent control, especially in the shorter irons.
