Miyazaki Mahana Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

Miyazaki Mahana

The quest for a lightweight, accurate shaft is an ongoing one if you’re a golf gear nut.

It’s understandable that a stable, lightweight shaft is so hard to find because “light weight” and “stability” are sort of conflicting concepts when it comes to golf club shafts.

While Miyazaki may not be a household name in the golf shaft industry, we have always heard good things about the Miyazaki Mahana shafts.

Namely, that they were indeed both lightweight and stable. So we wanted to get our hands on a Miyazaki Mahana shaft to see what all the hype was about.

In the following review, we will be telling you everything you need to know about this shaft including who should be gaming it.

Miyazaki Mahana Shaft Overview

First of all, the Miyazaki Mahana shafts are indeed lightweight.

The heaviest one checks in at just 54 grams. So to say that the Miyazaki Mahana shafts are for slower swing speed players would be an understatement.

The Miyazaki Mahana is a graphite shaft that has a stiff tip section. The overall feel of this shaft was smooth. You can feel it load up and release but you don’t get a nasty jolt up your arms.

The kick point is in the midsection and there is at least some semblance of stability.

What we mean is that the kick isn’t nasty. While you do get help with club head speed and a very active feel, the head still squares up at impact even if you are swinging outside of yourself.

However, it should be mentioned that some of our testers reported that it was easy to lose track of the club head on the downswing with this shaft.

Still, that could be the fault of our gear. If you’re using a heavier, game improvement driver or fairway head, sure, we could see how it could be easy to lose track.

But for other kinds of driver heads, this may not actually be a problem. Just something to keep in mind.

The Miyazaki Mahana shafts look really cool too. The red “Miyazaki” lettering is in the proscenium while the white “Mahana” lettering is behind and striped.

It gives the branding a ghostly and contrasting look. All of the lettering is placed against a dead black backdrop which makes for a dramatic effect.

Why is the Miyazaki Mahana So Popular?

In fact, we would contend whether the Miyazaki Mahana shaft really is all that popular.

While many brands such as Srixon have taken note of the Miyazaki Mahana and used it for their clubs, this is still a relatively obscure shaft.

However, it is making a name for itself by appealing to weaker swingers who need help with distance.

We can see how a shaft like this would appeal to higher handicap players who want better feel and club head control as well.

How Does the Miyazaki Mahana Perform?

As we mentioned earlier in the review, the Miyazaki Mahana shaft has a stiff tip section.

What this does for the shaft is increase impact accuracy and transfers more swing energy.

And with a shaft that feels as “whippy” as the Miyazaki Mahana, you are going to want as much accuracy and swing energy transfer as possible.

The Miyazaki Mahana shaft generated great distance from the tee. Our testers were getting an average carry distance of 259.7 yards after three swings apiece.

A lot of this had to do with how much you can load up on this shaft and how much of that energy is actually transferred to the ball.

The ball speeds we were getting were definite increases from what we were used to seeing.

Of course, you can expect high spin rates with this shaft. Our spin rates were consistently in the 2700 RPM neighborhood.

Launch was mid/high and the divergence was in the acceptable 12 – 14 yard range.
