Maxfli Golf Clubs Reviewed – Who Makes Them? Are They Any Good?

Maxfli Golf Clubs

These days, Maxfli is best-known for their golf balls.

But there was a time that the Maxfli brand adorned game improvement golf clubs.

In fact, the brand developed a sort of cult following for their easy-to-use golf clubs.

If you want a set of Maxfli golf clubs in 2023, you will have to peruse the used golf club outlets since the company doesn’t make clubs anymore.

But should you even bother? Were Maxfli golf clubs any good to begin with? I tested some of their most popular clubs to find out.

A Brief History of Maxfli Golf Clubs

Maxfli was a creation of the Dunlop Tire and Rubber Corporation.

They developed the Maxfli brand to be one of their sports brands. Since its inception, Maxfli has changed ownership a number of times.

They were once acquired by Taylormade golf. Then, in 2008, Taylormade sold Maxfli to Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Since the sale to Dick’s, emphasis has switched from golf clubs to golf balls and golf accessories.

Who Makes Maxfli Golf Clubs?

Unfortunately, no one makes Maxfli golf clubs anymore.

But when Maxfli clubs were in production, Taylormade oversaw their manufacturing.

It’s also possible that Dick’s Sporting Goods produced some of their last models before shifting focus to golf balls and golf accessories.

Maxfli Revolution Irons Review

Maxfli Revolution Irons

The Maxfli Revolution irons have a multi-layer design that makes them feel forged even though they’re cast.

They have a shallow cavity back design and blades that look workable and forgiving at the same time.

Selling Points

  • Moderate top line
  • Fairly compact blade
  • Moderate sole width

Performance

The Maxfli Revolution irons have a clean look at address.

The blade isn’t very long and the sweet spot isn’t exactly expansive. It’s clear that these irons were designed to appease experienced golfers.

I really liked that I could fade or draw the ball at will with these irons. You have to be on-point with your angle of attack; but if you hit the ball pure you can affect pretty much any kind of shot shape you want.

These aren’t distance machines by any means. In fact, the 4-iron played about three yards shorter than my gamer irons on average.

But they are consistent. You can expect the same distance swing after swing.

They have a soft feel despite being cast. But when you miss the somewhat narrow sweet spot, you can feel it in your forearms.

The launch is mid high with a very neutral flight. The workability is excellent if you know what you’re doing.

Who Are They for?

The Maxfli Revolution irons are a good choice for players who demand versatility from their irons.

If you have the skill, you can work the Maxfli Revolution irons pretty much any way you want.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • They have a soft feel
  • They’re very workable
  • Classic blade design

Cons:

  • Not great for beginners

Overall Score: 96/100

Maxfli Black Max Golf Clubs Review

Maxfli Black Max Golf Clubs

The Maxfli Black Max golf club set includes a 10.5 degree driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, #3 hybrid, #4 hybrid, irons 5-PW, sand wedge, putter and a stand bag.

The set is aimed towards beginners and high handicappers.

Selling Points

  • Graphite wood shafts
  • Semi-mallet putter
  • Affordable

Performance

The driver in this set is very forgiving and has an expansive sweet spot.

My full swings felt comfortable and I hit face-center almost every time. The two fairway woods have a more compact shape which gives them a bit more workability off the deck.

The hybrids also have a compact design that very closely resembles the fairway woods. As a result, the transition from fairway woods to hybrids was very smooth.

However, I question the decision to include a #3 fairway and #3 hybrid in the same set. One of these clubs is sure to be rendered useless by anyone who buys this set.

The irons have deep face profiles and moderate sole widths. The blades are also moderate. The overall profile sits between player’s performance and game improvement.

The irons are forgiving overall but they lack consistency. On some swings, they launched really high and on others I got more of a middle flight.

The sand wedge is set to 56 degrees and launches high; but I couldn’t get a lot of spin out of it. The putter has a nice balance to it and helpful alignment markers.

Who Are They for?

The Maxfli Black Max golf club set would be a good choice for beginners and high handicappers – basically anyone who prioritizes forgiveness above all else.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Good value
  • Forgiving woods
  • Workable fairway woods

Cons:

  • Potential gapping issues

Overall Score: 94/100

Maxfli Varsity Golf Clubs Review

Maxfli Varsity Golf Clubs

The Maxfli Varsity golf club set includes a 10.5 degree driver, a 3-wood, 5-iron, 7-iron, 9-iron, sand wedge and a semi-mallet putter.

This is a junior set intended for boys.

Selling Points

  • Beginner set for boys
  • Hybrid irons
  • Stand bag included

Performance

The Maxfli Varsity set has a large titanium driver that produces steep launch angles and is very forgiving.

The stainless steel fairway wood has a deep, forgiving face profile that’s perfect if you tend to swing heavy.

The irons have very wide soles and deep cavity undercuts. They launch very high with very little effort and maintain good ball speed on off-center strikes.

The putter, unfortunately, doesn’t produce forward roll very quickly. There just isn’t enough grip on the face or heft in the head.

Who Are They for?

The Maxfli Varsity golf club set is definitely for young players who are learning the game. It’s a good set to take lessons with.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Forgiving irons
  • Good launch throughout the set

Cons:

  • Not a complete iron set

Overall Score: 95/100

Is Maxfli A Good Brand? – Final Thoughts

Maxfli Black Max Golf

I actually really liked the Revolution irons.

They were very workable and had a premium feel. I think some of their golf club sets may have some durability issues; but overall Maxfli is still a good brand if you are looking to save money on golf gear.
