Garmin S62 Vs Garmin S40 Comparison And Review 2021

Two new watches released in 2020 by the kings of golf gps equipment, Garmin. The S62 was a long awaited upgrade on the premium S60 and the S40 was a first iteration of a much needed mid level watch.

The S40 is a mid level watch that looks amazing. It has a 1.2″ color touchscreen with interchangeable look and feel. When it was first released, the price was a little bit high but since the price has come down a bit, this watch is definitely worth a considering.

People scoffed when I said that the S62 would reign as the heavyweight champion of golf GPS watches for at least years but almost 2 years later and no other watch is coming close in terms of performance and features.

Garmin S40 Overview

For me the S40 is the best looking watch on the market and it packs a plethora of mid level golf watch features, which would be considered premium from a different golf brand.

The 1.2″ x 1.2″ color touchscreen is slick and robust, it is also readable in sunlight, displaying the over 42,000 courses that load quickly when you arrive at any of them

You get distance to the front middle and back of the green alongside distances to hazards and the hazards length. The full overview is premium feature that is missing from the watch but you do get layup distances for course management.

You get free access to the Garmin app and auto shot tracks your progress on each hole, simply input your amount of putts on the green and it will keep score before automatically moving onto the next hole.

The watch has no slope feature which will make it legal for tournament play.

The battery life of 10 hours in GPS mode will give almost two rounds but you will need to remember to charge it before each time you play a full 18 holes.

The S40 also contains a step counter and fitness profiles for various sports.

The watch looks so good, you will be able to wear it all the time and not just for golf. It also hooks up to your phone via bluetooth.

The S40 didn’t represent good value when it came but since it has dropped in price to about $220, it is definitely worth considering.

Garmin S62 Overview

The S62 is hands down the best golf gps watch I have ever used both in terms of features and performance. One drawback is the heftier price tag to match the quality.

The S62 has added an additional battery which will give 15 hours or almost 3 rounds in GPS mode and the watch will last for weeks between charges in normal mode.

You also get a heart rate monitor and various sport profiles making it a great option for sports people and full time wear.

The face of the watch is larger than the S40 at 1.7″ x 1.7″ but it seems necessary to pack all of the features in.

You get the 42,000 courses as expected with autoshot and a new Virtual Caddie system.

The caddie will suggest a club based on slope and it now even takes wind into consideration.

You get advanced stats like drive accuracy, fairways and greens in regulation and more.

The S62 is the ultimate in course management with distances to any point on the hole you are playing and leaving you with distance to the hole from that point.

You get green view and manual pin position also included.

The compass feature is one of our favorites it shows the direction and distance to the green at all times, even when you can’t see it.

Garmin Pay will allow you to pay for drinks and food in the clubhouse after your round, through the watch and you can also use it anywhere you go.

You get the quick change bands along with the custom downloadable interfaces to complete an amazing watch from the GPS kings, Garmin.

The S62 is hands down, the best watch on the market. It costs a bit more but if you have the budget and want the best, the S62 is the only option for you.

The S40 is a more compact and better looking watch that can be worn at all times. It doesn’t have a slope feature which makes it better for tournament play and if you a slick looking watch on more of a budget, the S40 is going to be the one for you.
