The Garmin S42 is a mid range premium watch the rests between the S12 and the S62 and it replaces the S40 which was only released in 2020.
The S62 represents the best gps watch on the market right now. It replaces the long reigning Garmin S60 as the undisputed heavyweight king of golf gps watches on the market right now.
Garmin S42 Overview
The S42 replaces the S40, although it is virtually the same watch with a couple of improvements, included the battery life and some slight design changes.
The watch has the same 1.2″ x 1.2″ color face and it loads the 42,000 pre-loaded courses faster than most of the competition.
You get distances to the front, middle and back of the green as well as distances any hazards on the whole and doglegs.
The S42 watch can be considered the most stylish in the Garmin range with the smaller face than the S42 and sleeker, quick change bands, you also get downloadable watch interfaces far a different look and feel any time you leave the house.
There is no heart monitor but you do get a step counter and profiles for various different sports.
The watch connects to the Garmin App for performance tracking that you can take to the next level with the CT10 sensors.
The battery life on the S42 is distinctly better than the S40, last 2 full rounds or 15 hours, while the S40 can only guarantee 1 full round.
Garmin S62 Overview
The S62 was released early in 2020 to unseat the S60 as the best premium golf watch on the market and it has done just that with enhanced features and enhanced performance.
The first thing to notice about the S62 is the screen is a good deal larger at 1.7″ x 1.7″ with a crisper, sharper display and gorilla glass as standard to protect the screen better. The S62 accomplishes this without looking overly bulky on the wrist too.
The battery has also been markedly improved to 15 hours in GPS mode and a couple of weeks in watch mode.
Virtual caddie makes a selection of which club you should play on any shot and even takes wind and slope into consideration in what shot you should play.
The watch connects to the Garmin app to track you shots and can also benefit from the CT10 sensors.
You can pick any spot on the hole you are playing and get the distance to that spot and there is also the super handy compass feature which always gives the direction and the distance to the green at any time.
For us the S62 is the better value and the best purchase from Garmin. The S42 is legal for tournament play and is a bit smaller on the wrist. It is also a bit cheaper but for the S62 is the much better option for almost any golfer.

I get out to the course or range as often as possible and review all the equipment I’ve come across on this blog.
