Epon AF-703 Irons Review – Are They Good for High Handicappers?

Epon AF-703 Irons0

“The Epon AF-703 irons certainly have a unique look; but it’s their design elements that really set them apart from your average game improvement irons.”

Make no mistake about it though: these are definitely game improvement irons.

Epon has made a name for itself by throwing premium parts and design elements into practical game improvement clubs.

The Epon AF-703 irons are a shining example of that philosophy. In the following review, we will be telling you about specific performance aspects of the Epon AF-703 irons.

We will also be providing you with some insight as to who should be gaming them. Let’s get started.

Epon AF-703 Irons Overview

“You don’t see many GI irons that have been billet forged.”

But that’s exactly what you get with the Epon AF-703 irons. They are billet forged from S20C carbon steel.

S20C carbon steel is very soft and when we tested these irons, the soft feel is one of the first things our testers noticed about these irons.

Let’s talk looks for a minute. Right away, you can tell that the Epon AF-703 irons are GI irons because of their considerable footprint.

Like the Epon AF-705 irons, they have a nearly even topline that keeps the face profile high from toe to heel. The profile is on the large side with plenty of face area to work with.

These are cavity back irons with a considerable undercut. The undercut actually looks a bit wonky. It has hills and valleys that run from the toe to the heel.

That unique undercut design coupled with the large profiles make these irons stand out. And depending on who you talk to, they could stand out in a good or bad way.

It should also be mentioned that the Epon AF-703’s are hollow-body irons. This means the face is virtually unsupported so that it can flex more at impact and generate more distance.

Who Are the Epon AF-703 Irons for?

The Epon AF-703 irons are definitely most beneficial to high handicap players and beginners.

More specifically, beginners and high handicappers with deep pockets. These are about as premium a set of GI irons can be.

The profile is similar to the Big Bertha’s but the materials and design are similar to Mizuno’s.

How Forgiving Are the Epon AF-703 Irons?

“The generous offset and considerable footprint make these irons fundamentally forgiving.”

High handicappers will have no trouble squaring the face at impact. Speaking of the face, the Epon AF-703 irons sport massive sweet spots and a really nice finish.

The hitting zone is considerable but still manages to look great behind the ball.

The Epon AF-703 irons also have relatively strong lofts but the deep undercut cavity still allows inexperienced players to get the ball up in the air.

The soles aren’t the widest we’ve seen in GI irons. They are of a moderate thickness that is pleasing to the eye and still allows for good forgiveness in the rough.

But really, it’s the sheer size of these irons that makes them forgiving. If you don’t mind the girthy appearance at address, the Epon AF-703 irons will reward you with tremendous forgiveness.

Are the Epon AF-703 Irons Easy to Hit?

“In a word, absolutely.”

Again, the large footprint plays a major role. Our testers (a group that consists of mid and 18+ handicappers noted that it was very easy to find the sweet spot on these irons.

And once they found the sweet spot, it was easy to nail it on every swing thereafter.

Another point of note is that the S20C carbon steel imparts a smooth feel to these irons even on mis-hits.

The sole is wide enough to glide through the rough too – although we wish it  was a bit more rounded. Overall it’s very easy to get the hang of these irons very quickly.

Key Technology That Make the Epon AF-703 Irons Good for Beginners

“It’s hard to argue with size when it comes to game improvement clubs.”

The larger your clubs, the easier it will be to make contact. But we were impressed with the combination of strong lofts and low CG.

This allowed our testers to get good distance from the Epon AF-703 irons while at the same time, getting the launch angles they needed.

One thing we should mention though is that the Epon AF-703 irons have good initial height. Note the emphasis. They start to drop pretty quickly which we thought was a fluke at first.

But tester after tester had the same issue. It’s not a deal-breaker by any means; but it should be mentioned as it can affect carry distance.

Are the Epon AF-703 Irons Good for Mid Handicappers?

They’re good for mid handicappers; but not great.

We can see 15-18 handicappers taking advantage of the copious forgiveness.

However, there isn’t enough versatility or workability to be viable for most players under a 15 handicap.

Are the Epon AF-703 Irons Good for Low Handicappers?

“There isn’t much here for low handicappers.”

The launch and spin rates are likely too high for stronger swingers to optimize distance.

Plus, low handicappers will most likely take exception to playing what look like shovels.

Pros & Cons of the Epon AF-703 Irons

Pros:

  • The Epon AF-703 irons are very forgiving
  • They launch easily
  • They have a smooth feel even on mis-hits
  • Tight shot dispersion
  • Easy to turn the club heads over

Cons:

  • It’s hard to find a brand new set
  • High spin in the long irons

Final Thoughts on the Epon AF-703 Irons for High or Mid Handicappers

Epon AF-703 Irons

“For high handicappers, the Epon AF-703 irons would offer a confidence and distance boost.”

The great thing about the Epon AF-703 irons for high handicappers is that they allow you to take your full swing (and maybe a bit more) without being overly concerned with contact.

Mid handicappers could benefit from the forgiveness factor; but that’s not really who the Epon AF-703 irons were made for.
