Cobra Speedzone Vs. Cobra LTDx Irons Comparison Overview

We know Cobra to be innovators. Many of the design aspects that go into their clubs are very unique. So when we got the opportunity to test a new set of Cobra irons, we were excited. We couldn’t think of a better set to compare the new Cobra LTDx irons to than another Cobra iron set.

So we settled on the popular Cobra Speedzone irons. Like the Speedzone irons in their time, the new Cobra LTDx irons introduce new features that you can really notice with every swing. Let’s get into the details.

Cobra Speedzone Irons Overview

The Cobra Speedzone irons debuted in January of 2020 and since then, they have set the standard for fast irons.

Cobra doesn’t mess around with their club names. If the name implies speed, you better believe they will be fast. Such is the case with the Speedzone irons. The Carbon fiber topline (a first in it’s time) and aluminum medallion cut head weight significantly.

The result is faster swing speeds. Some of our testers got a 4MPH boost in swing speed with these irons (average increase was just 2MPH though). All that speed is kept in check with heel and toe weighting which increases forgiveness and stability.

Distance is mostly aided by the weight savings of these irons. Still, the faces of these irons have been forged to be very thin so they still play plenty hot.

Cobra LTDx Irons Overview

There are some design similarities between the Cobra LTDx and the Speedzone irons; but the Cobra LTDx irons will probably do more for mid handicappers.

After testing these irons, we can honestly say that they don’t really compare to the Speedzone irons. What we mean is that it’s clear that the emphasis of these irons isn’t on being lightweight and increasing swing speed.

The Cobra LTDx irons are a bit more forgiving than the Speedzone irons. But like the Speedzone’s, the Cobra LTDx irons have a very expansive area of the face that has been made ultra-thin. This is where these irons get most of their distance.

The other half of the distance equation is the steel bar that runs the length of the sweet spot behind the face.

The new Cobra LTDx are a purer set of game-improvement irons while the Speedzone irons will be more beneficial to players who already have an accurate swing.

Cobra LTDx Irons – First Impressions

Even though these irons are new, they sport the same chunky sole that we have seen in previous Cobra models.

This was a comforting site for all the testers in our party. There’s no doubt that Cobra looked to make a stronger foray into the game-improvement iron market than they ever have before with the Cobra LTDx irons.

They launch high, increase forgiveness on low face misses and they flex to a high degree. What we were most impressed with though was that these irons still give you that Cobra players iron short game performance.

The grooves in the faces of the short irons are incredibly tight so you get an exceptional amount of short-game control from irons that fall into the game-improvement category.

When you first pick these irons up, it feels like that are too light to deliver the kind of distance that beginners with slower swing speeds need.

However, after you play around with them, you’ll realize that they do in fact produce good ball speed – even if you have a slower swing speed. The deep undercut allows the face to flex to a high degree; unleashing fast ball speed even fore beginner players.

We tested these irons in graphite shafts but you can also get them with KBS Tour 90 steel shafts. The graphite irons added to the distance and overall feel of these irons. They helped keep the weight down and contributed to flex.

There are also rear badges on these irons that are made form a combination of aluminum, acrylic foam and thermoplastic polyurethane. So even on full-bore swings, these irons maintain a nice, smooth feel.

The Cobra Speedzone irons don’t look or feel like much at first; but they really shine in terms of distance and forgiveness.

Who are the Cobra Speedzone Irons for

Cobra-Speedzone-Irons-5

The Cobra Speedzone irons would definitely be more suited to high handicap players.

Don’t get the wrong idea of these irons; they will not offer a lot of value to low handicap players. They don’t have the dynamic spin control that low handicappers value. They also don’t offer very much in the way of shot shaping ability.

However, none of that really matters if you are a high handicapper who is really just starting to get the hang of your irons. The price is right too. You can get a brand new complete set of Cobra Speedzone irons for around $600.

The Cobra Speedzone irons are definitely for high handicappers who need help in the distance and accuracy departments. While they won’t be able to help much as you lower your score; the relatively low price still makes them a decent value for high handicappers and beginners.

The Radspeed Irons from Cobra

Cobra also makes the Radspeed line of irons that are geared more toward mid to low handicappers.

If you are looking for better performance around the pin then the Radspeed irons would be better for you. They even come in single length sets if you want better consistency. The Radspeed irons are a more complete set as they are designed to play long while the shorter irons enhance spin control.
