Cobra LTDx Vs. Cobra Air X Irons Comparison Overview

The Cobra LTDx and Air X Irons have very different performance emphasis but a similar look. Cobra irons are known for innovation so if you are looking at these 2 iron sets and trying to figure out which one to buy you are in luck.

That’s because today we will be comparing the finer points of these 2 iron sets to help you get a better sense of how they will perform for you. Let’s take a look at each iron set.

Cobra LTDx Irons Overview

The Cobra LTDx irons are muscle back irons but they have the makings of a player’s performance iron set.

The first thing you have to know about these two iron sets is that the Cobra LTDx irons have significantly stronger lofts. The Cobra LTDx 9-iron is set to 36 degrees. So you get a much lower, more penetrating ball flight out of them.

The Cobra LTDx irons also have CNC milled grooves which not only look to be very durable; but allow for superior greenside spin as well. Another very important performance note is that the Cobra LTDx irons require a faster swing speed.

They have a steel bar behind the sweet spot that is suspended. It will add power to your swing; but only if you already have a pretty fast swing speed.

Cobra Air X Irons Overview

The design emphasis for the Cobra Air X irons was to make them as light as possible.

And they are indeed light; but not actually very much lighter than the Cobra LTDx irons. The Air X’s are cavity back irons with weak lofts. For example the 9-iron is set to 40 degrees.

They launch ridiculously high so they would be a good choice for any player struggling to get good apex height. The Air X irons also played a bit longer for our high handicap testers than the Cobra LTDx irons did.

The Air X irons also have more offset than the Cobra LTDx irons so they are better for fighting a slice. It’s pretty obvious that the Air X irons are more congenial to the play style of your typical high handicapper.

The Cobra LTDx irons are certainly better for mid to low handicappers who want better scoring ability around the green. The Cobra Air X irons will appeal more to high handicappers who need straighter shots and higher launch.

Cobra LTDx Irons – First Impressions

Even though these irons are new, they sport the same chunky sole that we have seen in previous Cobra models.

This was a comforting site for all the testers in our party. There’s no doubt that Cobra looked to make a stronger foray into the game-improvement iron market than they ever have before with the Cobra LTDx irons.

They launch high, increase forgiveness on low face misses and they flex to a high degree. What we were most impressed with though was that these irons still give you that Cobra players iron short game performance.

The grooves in the faces of the short irons are incredibly tight so you get an exceptional amount of short-game control from irons that fall into the game-improvement category.

Cobra Air-X Irons – First Impressions

At first glance, the Cobra Air-X irons look like very normal, run of the mill game-improvement irons.

And at the end of the day, that assessment is still pretty close. Like we mentioned, there are not a lot of fancy features or flashy design elements with these irons. You don’t really know what’s special about them until you take a swing with them.

By far, the most amazing thing about these irons is how light they are. Every single one of our testers experienced increases in swing speed (3.4mph on average) with these irons from the deck and off the tee.

Our only issue with these irons is a potential distance gap. The 8-iron in this set is 35.5 degrees while the 9-iron is 40 degrees. That’s a loft gap of 4.5 degrees. This could create some problems for high handicappers.

However, it should also be mentioned that most of our testers had to club down with these irons because of the distance they produce.

Who Are the Cobra Air-X Irons for?

It was clear that the Cobra Air-X irons were for high handicappers before we tested them – after testing, it became apparent that they would also be good for senior players.

Whether you have just started out with the game, have come back to it after a years-long hiatus or Father Time is catching up to your swing speed, you will be able to benefit from the extraordinarily lightweight design of these irons.

The Cobra Family of Irons

Cobra also makes the LTDx irons which feature a steel bar placed behind the sweet spot to help increase ball speed and stability. You would think that would make these irons feel like slugs but the steel bar is encased in soft polymer so you still get a nice feel from them.

The LTDx irons also feature CNC milled faces and cavity backs. Overall, we like the LTDx irons more for mid handicappers as more of a design  emphasis has been placed on feel and accuracy with these irons.

They play a bit longer and have weaker lofts than the Cobra Air-X irons so you still get pretty good distance from them. The biggest difference between these two sets is the increased greenside spin and workability of the LTDx irons.
