Cobra F-Max Golf Club Set Review

If you are looking for a beginner golf club set that punches above its weight class, the Cobra F-Max set may be a good fit for you.

Overview of the Cobra F-Max Golf Club Set

Cobra is known for making high-quality, tour-ready golf clubs across the board and we were glad to see that this holds true even in their beginner category clubs. Keep in mind that while the Cobra F-Max set is a beginner set, the price tag is not so beginner-friendly.

However, you get what you pay for. Before we get into the specifics of the set and break down our experience with each club, you should know that the Cobra F-Max golf club set  will grow with you as you start to improve.

The Cobra F-Max set lacks a lot of fancy bells and whistles of other Cobra sets; but we think this works to the advantage of the beginner who has just started playing. All the clubs look clean and forgiving at point of address and overall, this is really a set that you can pick up and start playing with right away.

Again, the only major gripe we have about this set is the price tag. Since this certainly isn’t the set you will still be playing once you break into single-digit handicap territory, we find it kind of unfeasible to pay $1,300 for it.

Despite the high price, the Cobra F-Max is one of the nicest feeling beginner/game improvement golf club sets we have tested.

Cobra F-Max – What’s in the Set?

The Cobra F-Max golf club set comes with a cart bag and the following golf clubs:

Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 4 hybrid, 5 hybrid, irons 6-9, pitching wedge, sand wedge and putter.

Cobra F-Max – First Impressions & Club Breakdown

The first thing that we noticed about the Cobra F-Max clubs was the offset. The Cobra F-Max clubs have pronounced offset pretty much throughout the set.

Of course, this starts with the driver which at address, looks very congenial to the beginner. The pronounced offset makes it much easier to square up to the ball at impact which helps with slices.

The entire set was built to be lightweight and you can really feel it in the woods. The heads are nice and balanced and feel good on the downswing.

While there are no adjustable weights, hosels or other such gimmicks, we did appreciate the fact that the Cobra F-Max golf club set features low and rear CG throughout. This is something that will really benefit beginners and high handicappers.

Driver

We tested the 10.5 degree driver but you can also get it in 11.5. The coolest thing about the driver is the carbon fiber crown. This not only makes the club look cool but it is a feature that is typically reserved for higher-grade clubs.

Practically, it helps speed up the club head. Carbon fiber is very lightweight so if you are struggling with swing speed (as many new players are), you will come to appreciate this feature.

Woods

Cobra included a 3 and 5 wood in the set which we thought was nice because we like to have options off the tee and deck. Like the driver in this set, the fairway woods sport carbon fiber crowns which makes them surprisingly light in the hands.

Of course, the graphite shafts have something to do with that but the usually cumbersome fairway woods are easy to handle in this set. Again, this will be a great benefit for new players.

Hybrids

The 4 and 5 hybrids in this set are 22 and 25 degrees respectively. We found that these were excellent rescue clubs when we veered off the fairway or found ourselves in tight lies. They provide optimal launch angles and are great alternatives to the long iron.

The only gripe we had with the hybrids is that they lack distance. You have to have a pretty fast swing speed to get considerable distance with these hybrids – something that newbies will surely lack.

Irons

While it would have been nice to include a 5 iron to give new players more options, we can’t complain too much about the Cobra F-Max composition. The hosel size is progressive throughout the irons and the offset is very pronounced in the long irons.

This will surely help with accuracy. We were also pleasantly surprised by the accuracy of the short irons. The short irons promote greenside spin and produce flighted shots.

Wedges

The pitching and sand wedges are set to 45 and 55 degrees respectively. While we were having some gapping issues with the wedges, we loved the fact that they produced high-arcing shots that stop dead on fast greens.

Putter

You get a traditional blade putter with this set which is nothing to write home about but at least it feels balanced in the hands. Feedback is lacking but new players will likely not notice.

Shaft Information

The Cobra F-Max golf club set is outfitted with lightweight graphite shafts. The shafts provide plenty of flex while dampening some of the harsh vibration you get on full swings.

Who is the Cobra F-Max Set for?

The Cobra F-Max is a good set for players thinking ahead to when they will need better-performing irons.

Also, it would be a good idea to have a lot of discretionary income lying around if you want to pick up this set. Overall though, the irons perform better than beginner clubs which alone may make this set worth it.

You may find gapping to be an issue in the short irons and fairway distance is a bit lacking, but other than that, this is a quality beginner golf club set.
