Callaway Mavrik Vs Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal Irons Comparison Overview

Callaway Mavrik Vs Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal Irons

Golf club manufacturers are always trying to one-up each other when it comes to technology and design.

So one would think that newer clubs will invariably be better than older clubs because the technology is always evolving.

But that isn’t always the case. Sometimes older clubs are still better than newer ones – depending on what the needs of your game are.

So we decided to test the tried and true Callaway Mavrik irons against the Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal irons.

Callaway Mavrik Irons Overview

Callaway Mavrik Irons

“In terms of features, there isn’t really anything cutting edge about the Mavrik irons.”

Sure, they have AI-designed faces; but that’s something that Callaway has been doing for many years now.

The most enduring feature that the Mavrik irons boast is the custom tungsten weighting.

The weighting is progressive in the set to provide more distance in the long irons and higher launch in the short irons.

And it really works. Our testers were getting good distance from the Mavriks (an average distance of 161 yards with the 5-iron) and good stopping power from the scoring irons.

The urethane microspheres also protect the player from harsh vibration when they miss the sweet spot; but at the same time, cover up a lot of valuable feedback.

It was hard for our testers to feel and hear the difference between shots that they pured and ones that they miffed.

Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal Irons Overview

“The Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal irons on the other hand offer great feedback that isn’t jarring even on severe mis-hits.”

Still, you know exactly when you mis-hit and by how much by feel alone.

The Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal irons are made from a high quality material called nickel chromoly which is incredibly strong, thin and responsive.

By contrast, our testers were averaging 166.3 yards with the 5-iron in this set after three swings apiece.

Ball speed was also preserved very nicely on shots made away from the sweet spot.

The Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal’s feature a complex sole geometry and a beveled leading edge that looks and performs better than the design of the Mavrik irons.

“Ok so in this case, newer does actually mean better. The Mizuno JPX923 Hot Metal irons bested the Callaway Mavrik irons in almost every arena. They even offer better spin properties in the short irons.”

Callaway Mavrik – First Impressions

The Callaway Mavrik Irons look amazing and deliver a ton of distance and accuracy with low dispersion between strikes.

Each Iron is crafted using Artificial Intelligence that ensures the weighting is in the optimal position and that these Irons maximize their potential.

They have 360 Face Cup technology which allows for some flex in the iron face on impact resulting in maximum ball speed and distance.

The clubs have a lot of loft, allowing you to get the ball in the air while Tungsten Weighting, keeps the center of gravity low in these irons and the Urethane Microspheres reduce vibrations on off center hits.

These are excellent Game Improvement irons from 2020 that come at an affordable price.

Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal Irons First Impressions

Straight out of the gate the JpX 923 look great, they are not big and chunky like some game improvement irons, but they are not the most forgiving irons on the market either. One thing is for sure, the 923 Hot Metal irons are built for distance.

The irons come in 3 flavors:

JPX 923 Hot Metal High Launch for slower swing speeds to get the ball in the air.

JPX 923 Hot Metal Perfect for Mid Handicappers looking for distance, forgiveness and stability.

JPX 923 Hot Metal Pro – Aimed at consistent iron strikers with more precision, control and workability. Likely to compete with the forged version and the

The next thing that stands out is the V-Chassis on the back which completes the excellent looks of the irons.

It also adds stability to the club face, improves the feel and dampens vibrations on any mishits.

These clubs are faster thanks to the new Nikol Chromoly material that the cup face, and cavity back designed clubs are made with.

It is 35% stronger which a stronger impact and more distance. It also allows the club face to be 8% thinner meaning a better energy transfer. The thinnest point of the face is now also 18% larger and the bigger sweet spot results in better shots on the off-center strikes.

More bounce and stronger lofts also add to the effect of more distance and a higher loft. The extra bounce helps to generate a higher ball flight.

While not being the most forgiving of game improvement irons, they look excellent at the address and offer a ton of distance for players with moderate to average swing speeds and beyond.

The Hot Metal irons are not going to be the best option for beginners and inconsistent strikers but they will be excellent for anybody looking for maximum distance and excellent control, especially in the shorter irons.
