It’s pretty surprising that golf balls are often an afterthought when players are taking stock of their gear. Surprising because the kind of ball you use can have a huge impact on your performance. If your game has hit something of a plateau and you can’t quite figure how to rise above, your balls may be the key.

In order to help more players start enjoying the game more and advancing their performance, we tested 2 popular golf balls that are suited to different types of players. Find out if these golf balls can improve your game in the following article.

Callaway Chrome Soft Golf Balls Overview

The Callaway Chrome Soft balls are a great option for mid handicappers who are looking to break into single-digit handicap territory.

Why? Because they offer a unique combination of distance off the tee and short-game performance. One tester in our group with a swing speed of 92MPH was able to get a max distance of 245 yards off the tee with these balls.

The Callaway Chrome Soft balls feature a thin urethane cover and even thinner graphene mantle layer around the core. This makes for amazing energy transfer off the tee and the deck. The cover material allows you to grip the ball with your short irons and wedges and affect spin to an acute degree.

The Callaway Chrome Soft balls would be great if you are just sitting outside of low handicap range.

Titleist Pro V1X Golf Balls Overview

The Titleist Pro V1X balls are tour-grade balls that will satisfy the demand for unrivaled short-game performance.

The first thing we have to mention about these balls is the feel. The Pro V1X balls have a superb feel around the green thanks to the 4-piece design and composite urethane/ionomer cover. We’ve never used such a responsive ball in all our testing.

You get amazing short-game spin control with these balls. Off the tee, you will need fast swing speed to get adequate distance but fast swing speed players were who these balls were made for in the first place.

If you are looking for help with distance and your swing speed is under 95 MPH, the Callaway Chrome Soft balls would be a great choice for you. If you are already a low handicapper and need outstanding short-game performance, the Titleist Pro V1X balls are for you.

Performance Off the Tee

The better testers in our party were getting average drive distances of about 195 but they were topping out at 209!

The Titleist Pro V1X balls don’t produce much side spin off the tee which allowed for piercing trajectories that didn’t fly too high either.

Performance from the Rough

We were seeing low trajectory shots from the rough which is a good and bad thing.

It’s bad when you need to get over hazards but good for staying under trees and trying to avoid the wind.

Performance from the Fairway

We really liked the low, piercing trajectory of the Titleist Pro V1X balls with our long irons and hybrids.

Better players will be able to backspin these balls sublimely while being able to avoid low rises.

Performance Off the Tee

The faster testers in our party were getting about 245 yards while the slower swing speed testers were getting about the same.

Performance from the Rough

Scooping the ball up and even spinning as you may need to was surprisingly easy with these balls.

Performance from the Fairway

We actually really liked the way these balls felt against our irons and hybrids.

The only problem was that the launch remained relatively high even when we weren’t trying.

Who are the Titleist Pro V1X Balls for?

The Titleist Pro V1X are certainly for low handicap players who want a combination of distance and short-game control.

Keep in mind that these balls have a ridiculously high compression which will surely affect the feel from tee to pin. If you have a good swing speed though, this should be no problem.

How are They With Short Irons?

We are extremely biased towards urethane as a ball cover material. Urethane gives you an unmatched feel and softness that really comes into play when you’re dealing with a ball as firm as the Titleist Pro V1X – especially with short irons.

You get to work the ball deftly with these balls thanks to the high compression core and urethane cover.

On the Green

The roll control is there with  these balls although we would say that they feel a bit dead off the putter face.

Overall Rating: 98/100

Who are the Callaway Chrome Soft Balls for?

The Chrome Soft balls partially live up to their hype by being a viable option for mid to high handicappers.

The compression isn’t low enough to match the distance you would get if your swing speed was in the “fast” territory.

How are they with Short Irons?

The great thing about these balls is the urethane cover and the 3-piece construction which allows for a good amount of greenside spin control. They definitely perform above their class with short irons.

On the Green

The Chrome Soft balls were a little hard to check on fast greens.
