Callaway Chrome Soft Vs Titleist AVX Golf Balls Comparison Review

Do you really need a tour-grade ball to take your game to the next level? Manufacturers like Callaway don’t seem to think so.

It’s rare that you hear of a golf ball that is touted as beneficial for players of all skill levels but that’s exactly what Callaway did.

With the Chrome Soft balls, Callaway aimed to create a soft-feeling ball that performed well off the tee for all players.

So we wanted to test its mettle against an established tour ball in the Titleist AVX. Take a look at what we discovered in the following article.

Callaway Chrome Soft Golf Balls Overview

The Callaway Chrome Soft balls combine some of the features we love in tour-grade balls with features that will help every day golfers get good use out of them.

First of all it should be stated that the Callaway Chrome Soft balls have urethane covers. We are sticklers for urethane covers because they allow for maximum control and feel on softer shots around the green.

Plus, they impart a soft feel on strikes with pretty much every club you could have in your bag. So the Chrome Soft Balls got off to a great start with our testers. The three-piece construction doesn’t hurt either.

In the Chrome Soft Balls, Callaway did a good job of creating a ball that lies somewhere between a distance and a performance ball.

Titleist AVX Golf Balls Overview

The Titleist AVX balls are pure tour-grade balls. They deliver great performance from the tee to the pin.

The Chrome Soft balls certainly had their work cut out for them when we decided to pit them against the Titleist AVX balls.

However, you may be surprised to hear that both the Chrome Soft and the Titleist AVX balls have a 3-piece design.

For the Titleist AVX, this means good distance off the tee even if your swing speed isn’t surging past 105 MPH.

Of course, the low compression of these balls will certainly lend itself to the uses of players who do have fast swing speeds.

We were honestly looking for more spin control around the pin with these balls but overall, we couldn’t complain.

The Callaway Chrome Soft balls were producing comparable distance to the Titleist AVX’s off the tee.

It was almost a wash in that department but our faster swing speed testers were smashing the Titleist AVX’s around 260 yards on average while they were squeezing a paltry 245 yards out of the Chrome Soft balls.

Performance Off the Tee

The faster testers in our party were getting about 245 yards while the slower swing speed testers were getting about the same.

Performance from the Rough

Scooping the ball up and even spinning as you may need to was surprisingly easy with these balls.

Performance from the Fairway

We actually really liked the way these balls felt against our irons and hybrids.

The only problem was that the launch remained relatively high even when we weren’t trying.

Performance Off the Tee

The Titleist AVX balls outplayed the Chrome Soft balls in terms of distance; but only for our faster swing speed testers.

Performance from the Rough

The low flight of these balls made getting out of the rough a bit challenging for some of our less experienced testers.

Performance from the Fairway

You get great distance with pretty much all your irons.

The problem was that these balls were a bit hard to work from the deck.

Who are the Callaway Chrome Soft Balls for?

The Chrome Soft balls partially live up to their hype by being a viable option for mid to high handicappers.

The compression isn’t low enough to match the distance you would get if your swing speed was in the “fast” territory.

How are they with Short Irons?

The great thing about these balls is the urethane cover and the 3-piece construction which allows for a good amount of greenside spin control. They definitely perform above their class with short irons.

On the Green

The Chrome Soft balls were a little hard to check on fast greens.

Overall Rating: 96/100

Who are the Titleist AVX Balls for?

The Titleist AVX balls are certainly better for low handicap players with fast swing speeds.

They go farther than the Callaway Chrome Soft balls if your swing speed is up to snuff and deliver the kind of short game performance you would expect from a tour-grade ball.

How are they with Short Irons?

The Titleist AVX balls were also longer (for both our fast swing speed and slow swing speed testers) with short irons.

Low trajectory and low spin make for piercing ball flight even with your 8 and 9 irons.

On the Green

The real star of the show here is the cast thermoset urethane. You get exceptional feel and roll control from these balls on all types of greens: fast, slow, firm, you name it.
