Callaway Apex DCB Vs Ping G410 Comparison And Review

Both the Callaway Apex DCB and Ping G410 irons give you a premium look but with the benefit of being designed as game-improvement irons. High-handicappers will rejoice at the forgiveness features that are packed into these iron sets and mid handicappers will appreciate the nice feel.

Still, you can only choose one (maybe not, if you’re rich) so it pays to do your homework. Luckily, we have done the homework for you and distilled it into an easy to digest comparison overview. Take a look.

Ping G410 Irons Overview

The Ping G410 irons were made to look like player’s performance irons but actually perform like game-improvement irons.

Translation: these irons will help you hit the ball farther even though they sport compact blade lengths. While the limited offset and the short blade length may scare high handicappers off, we implore you to stick with these irons.

The extreme toe/hosel weighting really does help to make the sweet spot feel like it was stretched out from heel to toe. We were getting impressive ball speed on shot that hit closer to the heel with these irons.

The face also flexes to a high degree which works well in the long irons but we were having a hard time biting fast greens with the short irons. Still, we really liked the compact profile of these irons and the aluminum/elastomer badges on the back made them feel pretty nice too.

Callaway Apex DCB Irons Overview

While the Callaway Apex DCB irons have a tad more offset that the Ping G410’s, they were still designed to feel like player’s performance irons.

And do they ever. The mild carbon steel construction of these irons will be a boon to beginners and low handicappers alike. Overall, the Callaway Apex DCB irons didn’t play as long as the Ping G410’s but the difference was almost negligible – we’re talking a difference of about 2 yards on average.

However, distance is not where these cavity back irons shine. The feel and control you get from the short irons excel where the Ping G410’s fall short. You get great spin control that allows even high handicap players to hang onto more greens.

The Ping G410’s play longer and are generally more forgiving but if you are looking for a set that will grow with your game, pick up the Callaway Apex DCB irons.

Callaway Apex DCB First Impressions

Callaway-Apex-DCB-Irons

We knew that the Callaway Apex DCB irons targeted mid to high handicappers but they don’t feel like it.

Right from the gate, we were blown away with the feel of these irons. The feel of the forged 1025 carbon steel is amazing. It allows for a solid feel at contact with feedback you would expect from tour-grade irons.

Assisting with the soft feel of these irons is the layer of urethane microspheres included in the head. We also liked that the sole had a substantial footprint.

This will play well with high handicappers at it just looks more comforting at point of address.

The Callaway Apex DCB irons are available with graphite UST Mamiya Recoil Dart shafts and steel True Temper Elevate ETS 85 shafts.

The graphite shafts will certainly be more beneficial for high handicap players so those were the ones we tested.

The 4 and 5 irons are what we tested first and we were impressed with the distance and launch. The set starts with a 4 iron at a considerable 20 degrees of loft then jumps up to 23 degrees in the 5 iron.

The Callaway Apex DCB irons certainly impressed with their feel, distance and launch.

Ping G410 – First Impressions

The first thing you are going to notice about the G410 irons is that they are much more attractive looking than the G410’s

The tingsten weighting in the club head and hosel have lowered the COG of the irons and survived to the G425’s as well.

The clubs are less offset and slight smaller headed than the G410’s and the undercut top line offers good turf interaction to turn the heads of the better players.

The clubs also introduced variable face thickness and a flexible hinge for forgiveness on off center hits.

The clubs offer forgiveness, distance and consistency to high and mid handicap players.

An ode to these clubs is that the G425’s are not that much better at all.

Who are the Callaway Apex DCB Irons For?

Callaway-Apex-DCB-Irons-2

The Callaway Apex DCB irons were designed for players with a handicap of 10 and higher.

The Callaway Apex DCB irons clearly have something to offer both mid and high handicap players. However, for high handicap players, the DCB’s will mostly be beneficial for distance, feel and launch. They don’t offer much help with off-center shots.

The Callaway Apex DCB irons could certainly stand to be a little more forgiving but they would still be a solid choice for beginners ready to break through to the mid handicap range.
