Callaway Apex DCB Vs Callaway Big Bertha B21 Comparison And Review

Callaway is a solid choice if you’re in the market for a new set of irons.

Of course, price and the needs of your game will likely be your biggest determining factors when making a decision.

Then there are always the minute differences that can be unforeseen deal-breakers.

However, in the following review we will expose some of these minute details so you can make the most informed purchasing decision.

Callaway Apex DCB Irons Overview

With the DCB Apex irons, Callaway set out to make the forged feel of premium performance irons accessible to mid and high handicappers.

The Callaway Apex DCB irons are the most forgiving in the Apex series. They feature the widest sole width and pronounced offset.

They also feature a deep cavity back design to promote distance and forgiveness.

Still, the 100% forged mild carbon steel belies all of these forgiveness features. The Apex DCB irons feel great.

The 1025 carbon steel gives them a soft and comfortable feel that mid to high handicappers will get a kick out of.

The Apex DCB and Rogue irons have some similar features. For instance, both of these iron sets feature Tungsten energy cores to help lower CG.

They also have a Face Cup design to help increase forgiveness around the perimeter of the faces.

Callaway Rogue Irons Overview

The Callaway Rogue irons don’t have the forged feel that the Apex DCB irons do but they’re still pretty good at dampening harsh vibrations.

They certainly do that. We were getting an average of 5 more yards with the Big Bertha’s than the Callaway Apex DCB. But perhaps more impressive than the distance were the launch angles we were getting from these irons.

The tungsten weights which, you can actually see jutting out from behind the sole, make it easy to launch the ball super-high in the air. The only real gripe we have with these irons is that they are almost impossible to work.

They shoot so straight throughout the set that it’s difficult to get any kind of precision ball placement from them. However, this is a flaw that can be overlooked since that’s not what these irons were designed for.

If you are looking for straight, long shots go with the Big Bertha’s. If you want better short-game accuracy and feel, check out the Callaway Apex DCB irons.

Callaway Apex DCB First Impressions

Callaway-Apex-DCB-Irons

We knew that the Callaway Apex DCB irons targeted mid to high handicappers but they don’t feel like it.

Right from the gate, we were blown away with the feel of these irons. The feel of the forged 1025 carbon steel is amazing. It allows for a solid feel at contact with feedback you would expect from tour-grade irons.

Assisting with the soft feel of these irons is the layer of urethane microspheres included in the head. We also liked that the sole had a substantial footprint.

This will play well with high handicappers at it just looks more comforting at point of address.

The Callaway Apex DCB irons are available with graphite UST Mamiya Recoil Dart shafts and steel True Temper Elevate ETS 85 shafts.

The graphite shafts will certainly be more beneficial for high handicap players so those were the ones we tested.

The 4 and 5 irons are what we tested first and we were impressed with the distance and launch. The set starts with a 4 iron at a considerable 20 degrees of loft then jumps up to 23 degrees in the 5 iron.

The Callaway Apex DCB irons certainly impressed with their feel, distance and launch.

Big Bertha B21 – First Impressions

The B21’s take on the legendary name of the Big Bertha series and these irons are super forgiving and easy to hit.

The Irons have been designed using Artificial Intelligence that ensures the very best weighting and features are included for maximum accuracy and forgiveness.

The clubs also have wide soles and a pronounced offset that ensures you get tons of forgiveness even when you don’t hit the ball flush on the sweet spot.

The clubs have a lot of loft, allowing you to get the ball in the air while the Tungsten Weighting keeps the center of gravity low.

You shouldn’t have any problems getting the ball in the air with these Irons.

Who are the Callaway Apex DCB Irons For?

Callaway-Apex-DCB-Irons-2

The Callaway Apex DCB irons were designed for players with a handicap of 10 and higher.

The Callaway Apex DCB irons clearly have something to offer both mid and high handicap players. However, for high handicap players, the DCB’s will mostly be beneficial for distance, feel and launch. They don’t offer much help with off-center shots.

The Callaway Apex DCB irons could certainly stand to be a little more forgiving but they would still be a solid choice for beginners ready to break through to the mid handicap range.
