Callaway Apex AI200 Vs Taylormade P790 Irons

The Taylormade P790 Irons pretty much invented the players distance iron category and they remain at the very forefront with the latest addition.
The Callaway Apex Irons have also been very popular and the latest Ai200’s are one of the longest and smoothest players distance irons in the game today.
In our testing we found the Ai200’s to be longer and with lower spin rates. They were also quite a bit longer and with a higher launch angle.
The Taylormade P790’s had a steeper descent angle and more spin which allows you to catch the greens more easily and hunt the pins with more accuracy.
Taylormade P790 Irons Overview

The P790’s are the best selling irons that Taylormade have ever produced and they created a category all the themselves.
The P790’s are forged faced, hollow bodied, players distance irons, a category which they created by themselves.
They offer distance, feel and consistency while also offering forgiveness to a wide range of high handicappers.
The irons have a thru slot speed pocket, low in the face of the club for mishits that are low and inside is premium Speed Foam Air behind the super thin forged face for maximum overall performance.
There is also tungsten to stretch that sweet spot along the blade.
Callaway Apex AI200 Irons Overview

The Callaway Apex Ai200’s are new for 2025 and make significant competitor in the Forged Players Distance iron market.
They have a clean look, almost like a blade but longer and with thicker top lines and soles. A Black Apex badge adorns the back of the sole, as it did with the previous Apex models.
These irons, scream power at address and they don’t disappoint in the distance department. They are low spinning but they do get a good amount of launch from the Metal Injection Molding inside the head which optimizes the COG placement.
The Forged AI Smart Face has taken data from 1000’s of golfers worldwide and has been made with the tightest dispersion rates possible.
With the Urethane micro spheres inside, the sound and feel of these irons is also second to none and you can mix and match between the rest of the Apex set easily.
The Traditional Callaway Rounded shape and attractive design, gives plenty of shelf appeal, despite the rather high price tag.
Overall Comparison
Both Iron sets are made fora wide range of mid handicappers.
The P790 are well known as some of the best irons available and I personally found the feel, consistency and accuracy to be a little better with the P790’s.
Also catching the greens was easier with the P790’s.
There is nothing more frustrating than hitting a good shot, landing in the perfect spot and running off the back of the green.
Obviously it doesn’t happen all the time with the AI200’s and you can also mix and match with a more player friendly Apex iron to complete your.
Overall very close, but just giving the nod to the P790’s.

Category – Player’s Distance Irons
Callaway Apex Ai200 First Impressions

The irons look clean yet powerful, A minimalist design with a strong black badge to highlight the power held within.
We have the traditional rounded Callaway head shape and the design has a compact blade, thin top lines and minimal offset.
The clubs offer power, precision and consistency for clean strikers of the ball.
The sound and feel of the Forged body and face is soft and the acoustics are premium too.
We like the high ball flight and improved spin rates too with a relatively steep descent angle.
They aren’t as good at catching the greens like the P790 or the T250 but they are longer playing and in the same bracket as something like the Ping i530.
Overall, excellent, clean looking irons that will appeal to a mid range of high handicappers.
Taylormade P790 Irons

Category – Players Distance Irons
Taylormade P790 – First Impressions

The first thing to notice about the P790 irons is the compact, forged heads that come in a shape and style that will suit the better players.
Despite the players feel of the irons, they also come packed with technology that will add distance and forgiveness like the Thru Slot speed pocket, speed foam and inverted cone technology which allows more flex on impact.
The forged irons are actually a hollow construction, filled with speed foam which allows much greater distances to be achieved than the original P790’s and the tungsten weighting keeps the CG low for an easy launch for an iron of this type.
The original P790 irons, released in 2017, were definitely for the players but with the remodeling in 2019 and 2021, these can also be used for mid handicappers looking to test the waters of players irons.
All in all, definitely not for the high handicappers.

Aidan Lehane here, I’m a Mid-low handicap golfer who has made tremendous progress in breaking 90 in just over 1 year of playing golf seriously.
I get out to the course or range as often as possible and review all the equipment I’ve come across on this blog.
