Our first impression of the Wilson Platinum Profile set was that it has a really nice aesthetic to it. From the premium back to the matte black PVD finish on the driver, the Wilson Platinum Profile certainly looks more expensive than it actually is.

But what about performance? What we really like about this set is that every clubs has low/back CG. This makes for high launch and great forgiveness – two things that average golfers could really use. The set includes a driver, 5 wood, #5 hybrid, irons 6-9, sand wedge and putter.

The irons are perimeter weighted to provide more forgiveness on off-center strikes. Indeed, out testers were getting very straight shots on strikes that were made closer to the heel.

#2 – Taylormade RBZ Full Club Set – Best Premium

If you have a bit more money to spend and are a mid/high handicapper, you will love the Taylormade RBZ Full Club Set. We were taken aback at how sleek and attractive all the clubs in this set look both in the bag and at point of address.

The set includes a 460CC driver, a 180CC fairway wood, irons 6-9, C-grind sole wedge and a mallet-style putter. You also get a pretty snazzy cart bag and 2 head covers. We really like the wedge in this set. It launches high and produces steep descent angles.

The driver has a crisp, satisfying sound on impact and yields impressive distance. The irons will require a moderate swing speed to get any distance out of them, but we were really impressed with the consistency and tight shot dispersion.

Pros:

• Well-balanced putter
• Good short game performance
• Plenty of storage on the bag

Cons:

• Not great for slow swing speeds
• A bit heavy

#3 – Callaway Strata – Best Budget

If you are having trouble with your irons then the Callaway Strata set would be a good fit for you. We liked that the Callaway Strata set has two hybrids. The entire set consists of a driver, #3 wood, #4 hybrid, #5 hybrid, irons 6-9, pitching wedge, sand wedge and a putter.

The irons have a traditional cavity back design and produce great launch. Our better testers had no trouble landing on the green with the 7 and 6 iron in this set from distance. The putter feels really smooth and rolls almost immediately off the face thanks to the precision milling.

The driver head is made of titanium so it is lightweight but still plays hot. But we really like the fact that there are two hybrids to replace the long irons. This will be a real boon for the average golfer.

• Good for high handicappers

• Very weak loft
• Driver scratches easily

Best Irons

#1 – Cobra Speedzone – Best Choice

Selling Points:

The Speedzone driver really lives up to it’s name. It has a lightweight design to help up your swing speed. It also has a front-to-back adjustable weight. In the front position, it produces incredible ball speed by reducing spin to almost nothing.

In the back position, you get greater MOI and forgiveness. A lot of the weight savings come from the carbon fiber crown. Meanwhile, the face seamlessly blends into the crown and sole to create a very expansive sweet spot. This increases forgiveness on both low and high-face strikes.

To top it all off, you get an adjustable hosel so you can shape your shot to a very acute degree with this driver. This is one of our favorite drivers on the market as it offers a perfect blend of forgiveness, ball speed, versatility and even shot-shaping from the tee.

#2 – Callaway Rogue ST Max – Best Premium

The new Rogue ST Max was built for forgiveness. It has a large footprint and will be very helpful if you have been struggling with accuracy from the tee. At first, we noticed a slight draw bias and were very pleased with the results.

Our higher handicap testers were finding the fairway a lot more often and getting increases in distance thanks to the straighter trajectory this driver yields. The CG is nice and low thanks to a titanium chassis that sits low in the body.

There is an adjustable hosel for further shot shaping. The Rogue ST Max also has a carbon fiber crown to save weight for the 26 gram tungsten cartridge. The tungsten cartridge makes it almost effortless to achieve inspiring carry distances.

Pros:

• Great launch
• Good forgiveness
• Low spin

#3 – PXG 2021 0211 Driver

What we liked about the PXG 2021 0211 Driver right away were the premium appointments – and we would expect nothing less from PXG even with an entry-level driver. The PXG 2021 0211 Driver sports a carbon and titanium crown to improve flex while at the same time maintaining stability.

The titanium alloy face plays hot while the honeycomb TPE insert ensures a solid sound and limited vibration. The CG is nice and low overall but we were a bit disappointed that the face nor the body were forged.

But we suppose that could be forgiven in light of the fact that the PXG 2021 0211 Driver is one of PXG’s most affordable clubs at just around $230.

It doesn’t get much better than the Callaway Big Bertha B21’s for average golfers. These irons have everything you need to play straighter and longer on the fairway – expansive sweet spots, pronounced offset and wide soles.

The Callaway Big Bertha B21’s also feature deep cavity backs for incredible MOI and great launch. At once, our high handicap testers were impressed with how effortless it was to produce straight shots with these irons.

While lateral workability is pretty scant, these irons are made more for distance. They would be a great choice for high handicappers and beginners.

• Not very workable

#5 – PXG 0211 Dc Irons – Best Budget

We were amazed at how affordable an entire set of PXG irons could be. While they lack a forged construction, they are loaded with other premium features that make them great for mid to low handicappers.

The soft polymer core is surrounded by a firmer polymer that acts like a spring behind the face – storing energy and releasing it very quickly to push ball speeds. The mass of the top rail has been moved backwards to save on weight and produce a center CG.

The PXG 0211 Dc Irons are also progressive in both offset and in bounce. In other words, you get better short game accuracy in the scoring irons and better distance in the long irons. The PXG 0211 Dc Irons also feature a 1.55mm face so they play very hot.

Pros:

• Great turf interaction
• Long irons produce very straight launch
• They feel really satisfying

Cons:

• Lack of spin in the short irons
• Shot dispersion isn’t very tight

Best Driver

#1 – Taylormade Sim Max Irons – Best Premium

After all these years, we are still impressed with the Taylormade Sim Max irons. They were ahead of their time when they came out and still have a lot to offer the average golfer. It starts with an extremely thin face that plays hot and produces incredible ball speed.

The Taylormade Sim Max irons are also very forgiving. On low-face shots, we were noticing ball speeds that were comparable to flushers. The Taylormade Sim Max irons also feature inverted cone sweet spot technology which expands the hitting zone out towards the toe.

To keep the thin face in check, there is a brace in the back that connects the sole and the crown. Taylormade calls this apparatus the Speed Bridge. In practical terms, the Speed Bridge allows for more stability no matter where you make contact on the face.

Pros:

• Very forgiving
• Good, solid feel

Best Wedge

#1 – Cleveland Smart Sole 4 Wedge

Our first impression of the Cleveland Smart Sole 4 Wedge was that it was amazing on chip shots. This wedge allows acute control over limited launch and bump-and-runs. We really liked the aggressive grooves that really help you bite onto inclined greens.

Even in slight wind, we were noticing better holding power from this wedge. The tiered sole design is also a nice touch and will help you avoid chunking even when you really have to get under the ball to control it’s flight. By far, the best thing about this wedge is the degree of control it gives you.

The tiered sole also affords the player a lot of forgiveness. If you have a problem with chunking on short chips, you will love this wedge. It will surely take some getting used to in terms of distance; but once you have that dialed in your short game will benefit tremendously.

Best Putter

#1 – Taylormade Spider Tour Black Putter

Last in your bag and last on our list is the Spider Tour Black Putter. The double bend design of this putter makes it very easy to see your ball and take your line. The combination of an aluminum core and stainless steel body makes for very smooth energy transfer as well.

The roll with this putter is incredibly smooth. The first thing that struck us about it was the feedback though. The multi-material design lets you really feel the power of your stroke and whether or not you need to dial it back. The Spider Tour Black Putter also features a Pure Roll face insert.

The face insert creates an almost immediate top spin for exquisite roll control. This would be an excellent putter in the hands of low, mid or even high handicappers. The hollow “wings” on either side promote a balanced stroke without adding to much overall weight to the head.
