Two undisputed kings of producing top notch golf irons, with the two in question today suiting slightly different sets of players.
The P790’s are more workable irons aimed at mid handicappers but they also incorporate forgiving features for the high handicappers.
There is no hiding that the T400 irons from Titleist are super game improvement irons with their thick and chunky heads, aimed at beginners and high handicappers.
Taylormade P790 Overview
The P790 irons were originally released in 2017 and got a very welcome upgrade in 2019.
They are forged irons with compact and thin heads that will definitely suit the better players.
In the 2019 version, they have added more features to generate more forgiveness and distance.
For one, they have added speed foam to the hollow forged constructions which the irons a much softer feel.
The muscle back design and compact head will provide a ton of workability and the spin rates will be much higher than a game improvement iron like the T400.
The sweet spot is maximized by tungsten weighting in the toe ( a visible screw ) and in the heel to increase the MOI.
The inverted come technology and thru pocket speed slot ensure a low COG, high ball speeds and more accuracy even on off center hits.
These are perfect for a first set of more workable irons for a mid handicapper and will be also perfect for low handicappers who struggle with consistency in their irons.
Titleist T400 Irons Overview
The T400 are undeniably all about distance and forgiveness. You can see it in the thick head of the club immediately.
These irons produce lower spin rates and more consistently straight shots.
The split sole design allows for high launch shots and these clubs also cut the turf well for high launching shots.
There is up to 100g of tungsten in each iron to stretch the sweet spot all along the face as well as an L shaped forged face insert which has the result of forgiveness and incredible distance in Titleist’s longest ever irons.
The clubs get progressively more compact and workable as you get to the shorter irons meaning you can get some spin on the ball when you are hunting the greens.
Overall the T400’s are almost like Hybrids with their chunkiness and are extremely long, straight and forgiving for anyone who struggles with their irons.

Taylormade P790 – First Impressions
The first thing to notice about the P790 irons is the compact, forged heads that come in a shape and style that will suit the better players.
Despite the players feel of the irons, they also come packed with technology that will add distance and forgiveness like the Thru Slot speed pocket, speed foam and inverted cone technology which allows more flex on impact.
The forged irons are actually a hollow construction, filled with speed foam which allows much greater distances to be achieved than the original P790’s and the tungsten weighting keeps the CG low for an easy launch for an iron of this type.
The original P790 irons, released in 2017, were definitely for the players but with the remodelling in 2019, these can also be used for mid handicappers looking to test the waters of players irons.
All in all, definitely not for the high handicappers.
Titleist T400- First Impressions
The first thing to notice about the T400’s is how chunky the heads of the clubs are.
At address you can tell that they are going to be long and forgiving, they almost look like a hybrid they are so chunky.
Added to that, they have strong lofts that ensure distance as well as forgiving are high on the list of benefits offered by the clubs.
The clubs are progressively sized so as you get to the shorter irons, they are less chunky and more workable.
The split sole system ensures a quality turf interaction and high launching shots while the ball seems to spring off the ultra thin, forged steel face which is also L shaped to ensure higher shots off the lower part of the face.
The clubs are offset so if you do tend to slice the ball they will also be a good fit.
100g’s of Tungsten weighting expands the perimeter of the sweet spot and as you approach the ball it is obvious that they clubs are long and consistent.
Overall first impressions, this is an excellent set for anyone who struggles to hit their irons consistently or any beginners looking for more distance from their irons.

I get out to the course or range as often as possible and review all the equipment I’ve come across on this blog.
