5 Hybrid Vs. 2 Hybrid Comparison Overview
In general, hybrids are great clubs for beginners and mid handicap players. They can make the game much more enjoyable and engaging because simply; they are much easier to hit than irons. But we’re probably not telling you anything you don’t already know.
What you may be pondering is the amount of hybrids you really need in your bag and if it would be worth it for you to invest in a long hybrid club. So to help you answer these questions, we tested a 2 hybrid against a shorter 5 hybrid.
5 Hybrid Overview
A 5 hybrid actually works really well as a rescue club. You get great distance from this type of club even if you find yourself in some tall rough.
In a more ideal situation though, 5 hybrids are good to have for long approaches. If you are staring down a par 4 or 5 and you’re on the deck about 180 yards from the pin, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to pull your 5 hybrid out.
Of course, the 5 hybrid will not play as long as a 2 hybrid but you may not really need a 2 hybrid if you have no trouble with your driver or a long wood and are getting good distance from the tee.
The 5 hybrid is generally the more versatile club even though you will lose an average of 30 yards of distance from a 2 hybrid. From the rough, from the deck and in the case of better players, from the tee, the 5 hybrid is the more useful club.
2 Hybrid Overview
The 2 hybrid might be an option for you if you are having trouble working your driver or your longer fairway woods.
The 2 hybrid is no slouch from the rough either. You will get more distance from a 2 hybrid when playing in tight lies than you would from a 5 hybrid. That all being said, it’s hard to imagine that you would need to pull out a 2 hybrid anywhere other than the tee or from the rough on par 5’s.
It’s long and decently forgiving; but the length is sort of what makes it the less versatile club in this comparison.
Overall we like the fact that the 5 hybrid can be deployed in more practical situations on the links. But if you are gun-shy with your driver, you still may want to consider trying a 2 hybrid.

2 Hybrid Overview & First Impressions
At an average hitting distance of 200 yards, the 2 Hybrid is one of the longest clubs in the game.
As the name suggests, a hybrid tries to mix the precision and consistently straight shots of an iron with the distance of a fairway wood.
The result has been a huge surge in popularity for clubs like the 2 Hybrid.
Most golfers will still carry a 3 wood and a 5 wood and the 2 Hybrid has a similar range to the 3 or 4 Wood.
If you are one of the many golfers who hits longer straighter shots with a hybrid than with a wood, a 2 hybrid will be an excellent club to carry.
The sharp leading edge on the hybrid can interact well with the turf and that makes the hybrid a ‘Rescue’ club from the rough.
If you tend to end up in the the rough off the tee, the 2 hybrid can be an excellent way to turn around a bad lie for your second shot.
The hybrid will sacrifice some of the workability of the 4 wood but it is perfect to hit straight consistently from the fairway.
One Club Up – 3 Hybrid
The three hybrid is very similar to the 2 hybrid but it has more degrees of loft and finds its way into more golf bags. The 3 hybrid hits at a more advantageous distance to match with a 3 and 5 wood than a 2 hybrid.
One Club Down – 5 Wood
The 5 Wood would be a similar but slightly shorter club distance than the 2 hybrid. The 5 wood has a bigger head and is blunter in terms of precision than they hybrid, which can achieve more precise targeting with less work ability.
5 Hybrid First Impressions
The 5 Hybrid has a large head, large face and a huge undercut to cut the turf and long grass easily to produce high and long shots.
The 5 hybrid is usually excellent for getting to the green in 2 on par 4’s or 5’s holes. You get great distance control from 5 hybrids which also makes them very handy on particularly long par 4’s.
The best part about the 5 hybrid is the consistency. It’s like training wheels on a bike compared to an iron but it does sacrifice some of the precision of the mid range irons.
Versatile and easy to use club that is also excellent from the rough.
The only problem with these types of clubs is that they launch very high so in windy conditions, they are not the best option.
One Hybrid Up – 6 Hybrid
A hybrid 6 club can essentially be used as a rescue club when you find yourself in the rough. You should treat your 6 hybrid as a cross between an iron and a wood. The 6 is less popular but it is useful for higher launching, shorter strokes.
One Club Down – 4 Hybrid
The 4 hybrid will produce a lower and longer flight than the 5 but because there is about 10 yards between the clubs, the 4 and 5 are a good option to be carried in unison.

Who are 5 Hybrids Good for?
Traditionally, 5 hybrids have been a favorite among junior players, senior players and lady golfers although getting more common with pros these days too.
The 5 hybrid offers a higher degree of forgiveness and is the perfect club for long approaches on par 5’s and long par 4’s.
They are also fairly effective as rescue clubs from the rough. Our only real gripe with this type of hybrid is that it is really unstable in windy conditions.
